Recommended Posts

that's it all over for another year . we are talking about putting another pen on our shoot, it will be for about 200 pheasants . any help on the size would be very helpful . one more thing we have one larch wood that the wind whistles through , how would you put a wind break there ready for next season.

I think size depends on the suitability of the location but a meter squared per bird is a good size. For warming a wood some giant Miscanthus grass on the windward side worked on my old shoot but it all depends on location again.

Put a lot of thought on where you site it!

We built a new pen last year and 2 new flight ponds.

The pen was flattened by trees in the gales and the ducks on the ponds flew out too low over the guns on one side of the wood and too high over the guns on the other.

Hopefully we'll have better luck this year!

It's a linear m of pen fencing as a guide ie 50mx50m for 200 poults.

When u get into jarger pens think u can drop down to 0.5m per bird. I think the heaviest advised stocking rate is 750-1000 birds per hectare (100mx 100m so only 400m of fencing)

Off course size will depend on a lot of other things too like cover and length of time u keep them in for etc.

The bigger the better, and also if narrow makes it easy for birds to flip over the wire if startled or when come of the roost
