What are domed /pointed pellets used for ??

If the point is even slightly off centre, uneven pressure across the head of the pellet will cause it to spiral, hence the greater degree of inaccuracy. Domed pellets don't suffer from this problem, since the pressure is distributed evenly across the head, hence them flying more ''true'.

A lot of people think that pointed pellets work better becauser they are, er, pointed .............. but they don't. Still, the pellet manufacturers are making plenty of money out of them, so they'll keep giving the punters what they want.:whistling:

The rest of us use domes. :good:

Everyone has made some very pointed comments (pun intended). Tried pointed pellets once when I didn't know better, now only use domed. Pellets of choice atm are AA field diablos, have used RWS super domes and JSB exacts all decent pellets which my gun likes. However there are only 2 places where I live that sell pellets and the choice is very limited.

More domed out there than pointed - there's a greater investment in tooling for the more popular product i.e. the domed variety and competition to produce the best selling product will be centred around the highest volume seller. There are still plenty of carp domed pellets around but they will be the ones made on outdated machinery or small production runs where possible sales make massive investment in tooling uneconomical. Not a fan of pointed pellets and tend to use Baracuda Hunter most of the time due to over penetration on Squirrels using my .177 S410 - regular domed tend to go clean thru their heads and I find the damage inflicted by the Baracuda works best-pointed would be a nightmare.

Thought about trying Wad Cutters but I'm worried that they tend to be lighter and thus cause less shock on impact - I was quite happy using Exact heavies until recently having 3 Squirrels that were shot clean through the head (and before anyone says it-I have also always been convinced that a clean head shot results in a clean kill) but have been fully aware of my approaching them up to half an hour later. This experience prompted me to first check the power of the gun (11.6 ft/lb) and then decide to change pellets to the Baracuda despite accuracy not being as good as the Exacts. Shot 4 last week and the pellet certainly make a mess on impact but its early days yet so I will review the situation over the next 10 kills.

only problem with wad cutters is they are a 5-10mtr paper punching pellet and over 10mtrs they are totally useless, I,ve not forum a rifle that will shoot them accurately over 25mtrs and that's stretching it a bit,

Bruno when head shot I,ve never had a squirrel flinch mate, are you sure the pellet is where it should be ? I use jsb heavies on the grey critters to devastating effects, superb pellet mate

I am now using them as I cannot get Defiant Ogives anymore, work nearly as well in the Super 10 and just as well in the Hatsan! They drop rabbits, pigeons and squirrels!

Evo - no problems with shot placement Sir - the last 18 I have shot are all within 3-4 yards of my zero point at 20 yards, besides that is the truly horrid site of seeing 3 of them sitting upright in a conscious state but with a hole clear thru the head from one side to the other (had no problems with straight on shots) up to half an hour after being shot. I know what everybody is thinking and I don't blame them, a head shot like that is fatal and I would be the first to say so if someone else was writing this post, but it's happened 3 times now and I cannot continue shooting them until I have found out why (despite pressure from the Landowner). The Baracuda's have not suffered this problem so far, unlike the Exact heavies that produced the sound of the pellet hitting the steel backstop on several headshot Squirrels I'm beginning to wonder if it's simply over penetration. I'm wondering if I should take a picture of the poor creature if it happens again but I would not feel comfortable taking it while the animal is in such a condition and it would be upsetting to some people. I'm hoping the new pellets solve the problem and the next few weeks will tell.

it could be over penetration bud by the sound of it,,, not having a go regards shot placement mate but it just seemed strange as I,ve not had it happen to me, is it sub 12 or FAC ?

by the sound of it you could do with finding a softer pellet that will dissipate the shock better maybe, its a hard one to judge but I also would not be happy if it happened to me also,

I cant even think of a pellet you could try, the funny thing is the barracuda match are a slightly pointed pellet basically the same as the bis mags but whenever I have used them they perform better than the bis mags

if you sort it let me know but I defo think it is over penetration

cheers Bob

Barracuda hunter extremes, very accurate in my gun, hard hitting and literally fold outwards to about double the size so no over penetration. Used them on rabbits to 40-50 yards no bother. I'm on my second tin now and I do rate them very highly. Worth a pop, good luck with what ever you choose! :)

Ps, the hunter extremes do look a bit odd :L
