Canary Grass

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We planted some canary grass 2 years ago, it was a bit thin in the first year but provided brilliant cover for the pheasants this year. I have read that you are meant to cut/ top the canary grass each year to stop it becoming too thick. The crop was just right this year as it was thick but not out of control. Has anyone had any experience of topping/cutting canary grass and which time of year do you do it? I was thinking late april/early may when maize and a few other bits of game crop go in?

Also I am planning to put a few more bits of canary grass in this year and was wondering if I could mix some mustard, kale or even some maize in with it first year to give it a bit more cover and for the canary grass to smother the kale/ mustard/maize in the second year. We used a triticale mix before, but the cover it provided was poor.

Thanks,
