Nissan terrano knocking

Most likely the free wheeling mechanism in the hub.

If you are lucky you might get away with taking it apart, cleaning, greasing and putting it back together.

If you are unlucky you will need to source some new (used) bits to go in there.

Undo the outer hub held on with allen screws and take the gubbins out. Simple enough job for DIY unless a complete numpty. Won't do any harm to leave the bits out IIRC but you won't have 4WD.

Caused usually by lack of maintenance and more so by not reversing a few yards when taking out of 4WD.

I had a lot of problems with trying to get a fault sorted on my 2000 Jeep Cherokee when I put it in four wheel drive one of the front wheels would bind I thought it wast the transfer case but non of the garages that I took it to would agree with me in the end I took it to a guy who mostly looks after 4x4s and he agreed with me I got a second hand one and he fitted it and the problem was sorted after nearly a year of scratching our heads.
