Reeling from having to miss a good day in the wind with Aga man yesterday (I can assure him and anyone else reading this that I would rather have been out in the cold wind shooting pigeons than tidying up after ungrateful and untidy children had been to stay for Easter) I headed out today with Mightymariner.

MM has accumulated some excellent land for pigeon shooting ranging from grade 1 to typical brashy Wold land to heavy land which will not be dry enough to drill until the end of April. We saw a bit of all of that today.

We met in the rain and drove to a small village in the Wolds where there had been drilling done recently. Two fields had birds feeding and others joining and for once we agreed where we should go and we took a field each. No sooner had we set up then the lines stopped. We gave it an hour and a half then packed up and went elsewhere.

The second spot looked promising, four hundred on the drillings and another one hundred on some poor rape. We chose to shoot the drillings and we set up several hundred metres apart in different fields in sunshine and a good wind. I couldn't help but think I was on the Norfolk marshes as there were no woods in sight, the land was very flat and we were quite close to the sea.

For the first hour or so we had good sport until a line developed into a field behind us which we could do nothing about. We ended up with forty odd pigeons between us which was a great result. I had the unusual experience of shooting three pigeons stone dead with one shot. A group of fifteen or so swept across the front of the hide about 35m out and I swung onto one bird and three dropped out of the sky. It has been a while since I last fluked three like that.

If you had been on marshes in Norfolk I don't think you would had seen 400 on drillings , not in the South as the pigeons are still on the uplands , up North Norfolk where Motty do his shooting might be different and they might well be hitting the marshes .

Three for one shot over decoys must be pretty remote , I wonder if the master ( P C ) have ever done it , I have had two loads of times but I cant remember ever getting three with one shot while decoying . don't mention what shells you were using as the members will seek out every available box the width and the breadth of the country

Never done three for one , lots of two for one and if I can remember a few (2) two for four. I ve reported before DB did six for three with the sixth bird going to a tree and dropping out.
