Forester alternatives

I'm looking for a cheap and cheerful (sub £2k) all rounder, ideally 4x4, that I can use as a run around, collect logs, go shooting and do the school run etc. The Subaru Forester seems to fit the bill but the mpg is dire, so are there any obvious alternatives? Otherwise I'll go for something dull like an astra estate...any ideas?

I hadn't considered the Rav4, they look pretty good all rounders.

Can of worms time....how do they compare with a freelander?

I've just sold a beauty RAV4 and I've had a Freelander you can tell the difference between the pair.toyota is like a car and the diesels are doing 40+ on a run I was getting 49-56mpg the Freelander nice motor 35-40 mpg but the little things keep going wrong on them and that's what costs you.but you either like Landrover or ya don't but the Toyota all the way for me.

Was your freelander a pre TD4 model?

Personally my money would be on the Subaru!! I know even the non turbos are thirsty but offset that against the build quality and its horses for courses!!!

Outbacks can be found at very reasonable prices too, they have the higher ground clearance than the legacy!

Another option would be an Impreza wagon again fantastic car and great fun to drive in the turbo version!!!!!!!! I had to get rid of mine, sadly it was just that slightly too small with 4 dogs and children!!! I bought it with 130k on the clock, and I don't hang around in them, all I had to replace was consumables. One of the few cars I have owned I would without a doubt buy again, well that and my old calibra but that's a whole different story!!!!!!!!

I bought an early 2000s petrol Rav4 for the missus, just over £2000 with 70000 miles on the clock in November. It returns 30-32 mpg (town and b-roads), is really comfortable, quiet, and spacious. Had no problems so far apart from an abs sensor which was fixed under warranty.

My dad swears by Subarus however, having owned Forresters, Imprezas and Legacies in the past. All can be picked up cheaply, rarely go wrong and are superb in the mud and ice. Horses for courses, but he is looking at a brand new Rav4 next, so make of that what you will....

Good luck in your search.

Cr-v, they are giving them away, I got a 2003 petrol 56k for £1000, even has a cool box on the dash for a can of juice! And the boot floor is a camping table lol

I've been in and out the mud pretty good with it! Loads of room, if you stand back and look at them they are just like a van with Windows!
