For short ranges - in particular rat work around buildings - they're great, because they pack a huge punch, but the relatively low velocity imparted onto a large pellet limits the likelihood of over penetration. Beyond 25-30 yards the loopiness makes it harder to judge aim points. What part of Dorset are you from?
