WelshMike Posted April 28, 2016 Report Share Posted April 28, 2016 I have been trying to catch up with a few of the foxes on one farm before the long grass makes my life a pain in the rear. I know that there are a couple of dog foxes about so decided to have a look on Sunday night. Arrived at the farm about 10 and moved to a couple of likely spots with little luck. In one of the fields I caught a flash of eyes but not very bright so I thought it may be a badger, checked through the NV and I was wrong, it was a fox. Problem time.....fox wouldnt come in to any of the calls (hand or foxpro), the field is awkward as it is somewhat undulating with lots of "dead spots" where you constantly loose sight of anything smaller then a cow, also the fox was the wrong side of a stock fence. I spent the next 5 minutes getting closer and closer to both the fox and the fence but I couldnt get a safe shot. I watched the fox come and go but still couldnt get a shot. By this time I was considering making the 200 metre dash to the far end of the field to get through the gate and into the same field. I finally managed to get a clear shot but the fence was 20 yards away and the fox was about 30 yards the far side. A slight bit of doubt went through my mind as I considered the ballistic curve but the 80 grain soft point passed through the fence and through the side of the foxes chest. 1 dog fox down Despite the weight of the Howa 1500 I am getting very attached to it after 2 years. I was feeling the frustration at the time thats for sure. I made sure that I took the shooting sticks on tuesday night when I went out. I ended up with another fox behind the same fence but she cleared it at about 65 yards so I dropped her off the sticks. I got myself steadied on the bipod and was shooting through a wire fence , my sight picture was clear but as I settled on the fox and released the round I saw the fox run off to the very loud sound of a round whizzzzing off into the distance. Thanks mate. Looks like you need to swap that comfy bed for a cold field I find that the longer days are lovely until it comes to getting after the foxes....and getting to bed at 1.00 in the morning.
