  1. remove the insides of the cab...propshafts exhaust crossmember bla bla bla engine crane lift and back trans'..replace clutch

......2....remove fan and pullet and fan tunnel ..engine crane...lift ...disconnect mountings draw engine forward..replace clutch

which is you preferred way...(if you do it by yourself...which i have done )

Seat base out, floor panels out, gearbox tunnel out, remove gear change fixings etc, disconnect props undo gearbox mountings undo bellhousing bolts, pull gearbox/transfer box rearwards till spigot splines disconnect............lift complete box out of vehicle manually through passenger door...........done this more than once on a series 2A, though it was some 30 plus years ago!.....always said I should have put the seat base and floor back with wing nuts!

Number two but I didn't need to release anything on the engine.

it is the method i have used............i made it a lot easier by replacing the fan housing rivets with small s/s bolts...then it is easy to remove it and the fan and pulley...forward 8" then up a few inches...all you have to do inside was take the tunnel off...

when i put it back i used rachet straps to pull the crane in......i did think about making 4 extended bellhousing studs that would be used a aliners and guides...then unscrewed and replaced with the proper studs...but it went in first time......

In 30 of being a mechanic I've never had the miss fortune to have to do a clutch on a land rover

Have heard others say what a pig it is and wondered if it would be easier to pull the engine out

that is what i was discribing...it is easier and quicker that way..

Easiest way I've found is to undo the engine and just shift it forwards enough to get your hands in and line everything up.

Only took the box out to do a clutch once and that was only because the box needing replacing.

although I think If you where to split the transfer box from the main box and take them out separately then that could make it easier?

I took the engine out on my 110 hired an engine crane. Engine out clutch fitted and engine back in all in a day. Straight forward really.

yeah....spend a lot less time on your back.........all you need to do is disconnect the fuel lines and remove the fan and housing...... :good:
