April Showers

Following our epic search of nearly three hundred miles last week trying to locate pigeon we set out on Friday straight to the drillings we had seen last week. The first two had no birds on them at all, we then looked at some clover which had a small number on it last week , this week was the same and we stored that in the memory banks to look at next week. Two more drilled fields proved empty, so we continued looking, we saw no birds flighting but we had one thirty acre drilled field to check . This ment a trip along the motorway off at a junction and back track to the field. When we drove down the track to the field we could see bird activity and the senses hightened.. We were in the frame of mind if its got birds on it that will do . We were set up by 14.00 and started shooting with twelve real bird decoys in a block on spikes, the sport was steady all afternoon . We had to pack up at 17.00 as DB had the curry house on stand by for thirty birds and a curry. As we left you could see birds still feeding I think you can see them in the picture.

Saturday, pick up at 09.00 and we drove up the motorway four junctions to see if we could see any drillings , we could not but we saw lots of yellow Rape we had missed over the winter. We looked at some of the fields we had checked the day before but no birds. We knew we would end up on the field we had shot on Friday which is usually the "Kiss of Death" but we had left it early and they could have fed on it for a good two hours after we had left. Sure enough as we drove down the track it had birds on it again. So we set up again in a different position with twelve fresh birds from the day before all on spikes. It was again 14.00 and the birds came within range but were wary of the set up so we added some flyers which gave them confidence and we shot well untill 17.30 when we had a horrendous hail storm which made the field a mud bath and stopped the birds feeding for ten minutes. It then cleared and the sun came out and we shot till 18.30 we picked up ninetyone pigeons for which we were very grateful.

You mention 'memory banks' and 'heightened senses'. No wonder I never shoot any as I am devoid of such things.

What was drilled?

Oh,, very good by the way, returning to the same field was risky.

JDog, you shoot lots under another name?? ( Motty ) ??

The field was drilled with peas last Monday , not much showing. It was a risk but we left early enough to let them feed on the evening and the morning also changed location on the field as we noticed that they liked one area of the field , not a flightline as such but the tree in the last picture so made the effort to walk out but regretted it on the walk back with the mud sticking to our boots . On the second walk back to collect the pigeon you could see the peas in our old footsteps as we had lifted the top layer off.

Well done PC ,i too was shooting pea field yesterday i knew it wouldnt produce much(30) but the farmer asked us to shoot it and after that would tell us where all his other rented pea fields are so hopefully some more shooting to come.
