Bracco Italiano

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm looking for advice/comments/views regarding the above breed. If anybody has first hand experience of working or owning one of these I'd love hear about it.

One of my Clumbers is getting on and the other is no spring chicken either. I've recently retired so I'm now able to devote the required time to a puppy and I really like the look of the Bracco. I want something different and these certainly fit the bill in that regard.

Thanks and regards.

The bracco is indeed a fantastic looking dog. But surely you can't want one because of it's looks?

Why not, if it's a working breed that's gonna work for you? "Looks" to be a perfect complement to a Clumber in the frumpy-faced dog department. Almost as good as matching up a bracco with one of these

for their looks...

Hector Vector, there's also a lady on the gundog training forum, "sam_from_italy" who often posts up great working photos of her bracci.

A friend of mine has one as a pet that they are now doing working tests with. He is a lovely looking dog and has a great temperament. He hunts like a Spinone in my opinion. Slower than a Vizsla or a German pointer but still covers the ground well.

Retrieves well but it's not keen on water.

I have seen a few others at working tests and they seem to do everything well.

If I could only have one hunting dog it wouldn't be a Bracco but if I had space and time or just wanted a pet dog I'd have one.

There is a guy local to me who has a few. I think he also had clumners once over

I have no direct Experiance shooting over one and I figure as the chap don't have no invites or shooting close to home nobody else is fussed for trying either

Sorry dude I forget Mungler pointed me this way. I have 4 of the beasts.

They are the most loving loyal animal you could ever hope to meet, I have Vizslas as well and never thought a dog could be more atune to family life and hunting then we got a bracco, we how have 4!!

They have the most incredible sense of smell and are awesome flushing dogs, they love the water and will run through anything to get at prey. Mine will pick up but as I have Vizslas if i have them with me too they tend to get to the prey first as they are so much faster.

As far as training is concerned they need a gentle but firm approach. Vizslas are in my experience relativley easy to train, Braccos a bit tougher, on par with training a gsp, they can be quite stubborn to stop if there are deer around, on the plus side if you want to use them to track deer they are awesome!!! The last muntjac I shot Darla actually picked it up and dragged it back to me.

I f youwant a superb companion who can with training make an exceptional gundog then a Bracco is the ideal choice, However if you want a tool that lives in a pen then Id say dont. They thrive on human companionship and do not do well in kennels, mine are rarely more than cm's away from me!! Idf you kept one in kennels youd miss the chance of the best bond youll ever get from a dog. I refused to sell 2 of my pups to people who wanted to keep them outside. I have sold them to shooters and a hunter that hunts from horses with one who has done spectaculalrly well with her.598735_10152602421345251_1842890295_n.jp

If you intend to only have one, get a boy as the bitches have a phantom pregnancy every season ( or get her done) and the other draw back with the breed is copious amounts of slobber!!!!

if you read everything written about them youd never buy one, I now have 4 and never intened to ever be without one again, they are awesome!!!

EE - that sort of post is what makes PW tick. Now I wouldn't have a BI, or indeed a Viszla, in a gift but the world would be a dull place if we were all the same. Great to read a post from someone with such enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, a breed. Enjoy your dogs.

Just want to say thank you to EE and his wife. I've been to meet his dogs this morning, made to feel very welcome and had a good chat regarding the Bracco. Got exactly the kind of first-hand, no BS info I was after. The Vizslas are lovely dogs but the Bracco is even more so. My mind is made up...
