Old style driving licence

Copper told me it wasn`t something they enforced, only the DVLA. If it was illegal he would have done me for it. He certainly showed no mercy over the lack of an MoT (although that wasn`t down to me).

Just get your bloody licence updated man!

Fine afaik. Certainly haven`t heard anything about them being phased out. Still have mine, although I really should get a photo license seeing as I haven`t lived at the address it shows for about 20 years. :ermm:

I'm in the same boat! Just found mine the other week after thinking for years it had been lost during the house move. I was told the fine can be as much as £1000...must get it done! :ninja:

Text from the gov link above

What to do with your paper counterpart

The paper counterpart to a driving licence has had no legal status since 8 June 2015. You should destroy yours if you have one, but keep your photocard driving licence.

>>>>>>> If you have a paper driving licence

Paper driving licences issued before 1998 are still valid. <<<<< >>>>> Do not destroy your licence. What about that then? Still valid.

When you update your name or address, or renew your licence, you’ll only get a photocard licence.

Yep, my licence is still the old original paper licence and still valid although somewhat threadbare. I'm not about to change to the photocard style just yet but not having any form of photo I.D. is starting to become a problem.

I get some very strange looks from youngsters that have never seen the old licence before

If you are old school and still have the original "paper licence" that was issued before the plastic card type, then keep it for as long as you can. You have to update the plastic ones every 10 years at your own expense.

The paper one that has become obsolete is the paper counterpart that goes with the "plastic" photo card licence (the one you have to update every 10 years).

When I moved house a couple of years back I changed the address on my driving licence but have subsequently realised that didn't count as having it renewed and it runs out next year. Check the expiry date on your licence, they only last ten years. Mine shows as being valid from 2013 to 2017. I could easily have been caught out by that.
