More fun on greens.

I had decided to shoot pigeons on some ripening winter barley this weekend. I had the choice of 3 fields, 2 of which I gained permission to shoot on Friday. That decision stood until I got a call from Jules (Muncher), telling me he had found a very promising looking situation on a field of broccoli. Knowing the area quite well, I jumped at the chance. Jdog had also been invited, but he was otherwise engaged with Fenboy. Other forum members have been busy filling their boots on greens recently - maybe it was our turn.

Jules secured the field early enough, although he unfortunately got his truck stuck on the sodden field. His brother rescued the truck for him.

It was unlike Jules to have no dead birds to start. He could easily have shot a decent amount of pigeons, had he had some. By the time I arrived at 9.30am, he had just managed to shoot a couple. I trudged up the field and got a second magnet going.

Pigeons were on the move all the time, and we had 3 good flight lines into the field. Many birds decoyed very well - some trying to 'mate' with the magnet birds. The field appeared to have been shot recently, though, as some birds were very 'spooky'.

We had 50 down by 12pm, and the 100 mark was passed by 2pm. The amount of doubles was slightly disappointing - not down to poor shooting, more the way the pigeons presented themselves.

The highlight of the day for me was Jules getting 2 pigeons with 1 shot. A pair passed left to right about 35 yards out and he took them both down with one squeeze of the trigger, as clean as a whistle.

At about 3.45pm a storm finally made it's way towards us. I had planned for rain today, but I didn't plan to forget my brolly. We evacuated the field for almost an hour. We returned whilst the rain was still falling, as pigeons were pouring into the decoys.

We called it a day at 6pm. A few pigeons were still around, but the best of it was had already. It took us 75 minutes to pack up.

It was a top day. We finished with 171 pigeons and a jackdaw.

The barley can wait until tomorrow.

You certainly made the right choice between Barley and broccoli , I got soaked walking down the tramlines on a big 100 acre field just to have a look at a patch that was knocked about and I didn't fancy setting up in the heavy showers with no cover and the crop laying about in water .

Another fantastic bag by the A team ( duo ) of the Fens , that will take some beating in the conditions you had to contend with . Well done.

Another cracking bag for the pair of you.

I have missed out on a good bag on Broccoli / calabrese twice now this last year due to the tractor beating me to a field , I am sure one of these times I will fall lucky !
