hi can the PW community help please .

I have had for and been very happy with for the last 4 yrs a Nissan xtrail 2.2di [03 plate] its fuel economy is superb I have just travelled to Whitstable from Newcastle on tyne on just over half a tank and still get upper 30s low 40 mpg around the doors ...........now what I would like to know from you nice people is do any of you run an automatic 4x4 and if so what and is the mpg like as I may very well need to get an automatic due to continuing problems with my spine and numbness of left leg/foot

I understand autos are a bit thirstier than manuals so any info gladly accepted

A few years ago we had a Freelander Td4 Auto, got above 30 from it on mixed driving, but with quite a lot of short runs. Now running a Disco 4.0 V8 Auto, and I daren't tell SWMBO what we get. I sneak in a few extra gallons from time to time without telling her... But our annual mileage in it is low, so I don't worry too much.

I love automatics what is the point in changing gear unless you are a boy racer I went from 10 years driving an auto to a manual X-Trail like yours nothing wrong with it at all but I just can not see the point in changing gear all of the time unfortunately I do not thing that Nissan put autos into the Diesel X-Trails you can get a petrol version I think they do in the later ones but not the 2003 model.

yeah unfortunately I know they don't do the t30 2.2di / dci in auto but they do do the 2.5 petrol in auto but they are a bit prone to head gasket problems .

so I,m just wondering what MPG the people with auto 4x4 ,s are getting because as stated the way my left leg / back is going I might need to change to auto .........having said that the old xtrail [2003 model with 165k miles] has just been to Whitstable and back and averaged 46 MPG

I am afraid that I cannot be of much help as I am thinking about going back to a jeep cherokee again if I can find one a nice 1998 one or a 2005 2.8 diesel auto but both of them are not good on fuel.

Perhaps it would help if you could give us some idea of your price range as newer cars/trucks would be better on fuel and perhaps road tax but a lot more expensive to buy.
