i have read a few reports lately on this forum suggesting the use of bangers, i stop useing them in the summer months as soon as the crops start to go ripe because a chap i know set light to a rape stubble field hanging one from a tree in the ditch luckily he spotted the smoke early enough and managed to stamp it out with his feet and useing the dogs water before it had gone more than a few yards. the experiance scared the **** out of him as it was next to a uncut wheat field fortunately the wind was blowing in opposite direction. late may is the latest i will use them. there are times when i would like to use them but darent take the risk. what do you guys do.

Good field craft should normally negate the use of bangers.

On one of my scouting missions in the winter I was glassing pigeons going into a rape field when the farmer pulled up. He had boxes and boxes of bangers in his vehicle and he gave me a box. They have remained unused apart from a few I gave away a few weeks ago. My view is that we should kill the crop eating pests not scare them off.

I have carried a box for some time and actually used a string last week to try and keep crows off a second feeding field. These were placed on a bamboo cane in a clear area in the field. The main reason for carrying them is when you have a farm who will not let you shoot they will let you place scarecrows or rope bangers to concentrate the birds on to your shoot.

Me too. Often used for crows when shooting a farm yard area and I don't want them sitting out.

Also when I am trying to cover a large area.

I always have a box handy and also use them on big fields, or adjoining fields to try to funnel the birds my way.

In "sensitive" circumstances (crop/animals/houses/etc) I will use plastic bags or plastic strips on canes to do the same job.
