Ford ranger gears

Driving home tonight my 2010 ford ranger thunder wouldn't go into 1st or 2nd gear. Felt like there was something sticky stopping it going into gear. Manage to get it in and out of gear with a bit of force. Done it a few times and it has freed up a bit but still not right. Any one else had this issue or has any idea what the issue is?

Garage aint worth its name if they can't diagnose and repair gearboxes . always looked for the cheaper options you can try this hand brake off foot on clutch pedal push gearstick slowly into first if the car moves forward as you try to engage the gear it's more than likely to be the clutch pressure plate. or if you put it into gear and let your foot come of the clutch just enough to take up the drive watch the gearstick for excess movement forward and backwards could indicate gearbox bearings at fault. hope this helps

We send all our gearbox faults to a specialist after we have diagnosed the problem. Reason for it? A lot of the modern gear box's now are such a pain to work on. If I'm in the workshop stripping a gearbox and get disturbed by someone coming in then I'm pretty ****ed. Some of the older cars/bikes are OK and take a couple of hours but for example the ranger, big box and transfer box. That many bits in the box if one thing is wrong it's an insurance claim. If something is not shimmed properly or is a few thou out again, insurance claim. Pull the box and take it to a specialist who can get parts a lot cheaper and won't take them as long. Then you start talking hundreds of pounds for specialists tools to only do one maybe two, just not worth it. I know of garages who won't do cam belts belive it or not :lol:

I sold up and been out of the garage business for a while now, :yahoo: I do take your points to be valid as you know how it is to run a repair shop now . you only do a few a year then the labour costs would make it hard to turn a profit . No offence meant by this old grease monkey :oops: .

Wish I could the cars are getting worse and worse :lol: none taken, a lot of people however do forget about that side of things :(

check the clutch is clearing properly the slave cylinder has a spring inside to keep the piston up to the clutch arm they fail sometimes which allows the piston to move away from the arm so when you use the clutch pedal you are not getting full clearance if its intermittent as in my case a spring had broken in the clutch plate and every now an again would bind so could not select gears, new clutch job

i use a ranger at work and gear box is bloody horrible nothink like my focus the gear box is always playing up usely to do with the cluch. I had a issuse a couple of weeks back and it wouldnt go into gear i found the cluch was sticking and needed pulling up by hand then it worked its a six speed to be fair theres always somthink going wrong with it

If you suspect a clutch fault like the clutch is dragging and it won't go into gear with engine running trying switching engine off and if all the gears select fine it will be a clutch or duel mass fly wheel problem or clutch hydrolic side. I know the early shape rangers had alot of gearbox problems as I worked in a Ford garage for 16 years now fiat dealer

We've had same problem ie hard to select first ans second gear on new Rangers. These are rental vehicles under warranty so no idea what fix was. We had two recently and both had to go back.

 

I test drove a new one last year with 16 miles on the clock and the gears did that.

Hi hope someone can point me in the right direction here ...... 2007 2.5 tdci  Got just outside home today and cannot get 1st or 2nd gear with engine running or with it stopped.... 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse all fine .... No noises, vibration other prior to not being able to get 1 and 2 ...feels like a mechanical obstruction ???? Any thoughts greatly received Thanks
