Best day ever, but soured by locals

Recommended Posts

Last week the farmer sent me a txt to say he had combined his rape at the end of our village and that I should get on quick because the pesky HS2 people were going to get on it to do some soil testing or similar. The day after his call I had a look and although a few birds had found it, I decided to leave it until after I had returned from seeing number one daughter up in Scotland.

Yesterday, conditions seemed ideal with a good breeze, slightly overcast and a few hundred pigeons showing interest by now. A quick call to a pal and we were set up at 1.30pm. We set up about 80 yds apart on the same hedge line both using a few decoys and a flapper. He also had a couple of floaters out a bit further in the field.

It was a very interesting few hours with us both having plenty of shooting but the birds were obviously far more interested in his decoy pattern than mine. He is an experienced shooter, I'm still learning, but it was remarkable how so many of the birds on approaching my set up, suddenly deviated towards him. Maybe my hide was more visible? I don't know.

Anyway, as coincidence would have it, he got to 100 at exactly the same time as I got to 50 and we ended the afternoon at 5.30 with exactly 180 birds, 64 to me.

A great afternoon but then spoilt somewhat. I noticed about 15 mins before we packed up a group of three people watching us from afar. We spent a good deal of time collecting the birds, bagging them up and carrying them across to the cars at which point these people had gone. When I got home I was looking on our local village Facebook page and couldn't believe what I was reading. Accusations that we were shooting anything that moved, using tethered birds as attractors ( you can understand a flapper might look like that), throwing food out of the hide to attract birds, the list goes on and on.

I have not responded and won't but it really makes me mad that people can write and claim such drivel on Facebook.

Or remind them that, if they feel an offence has been committed, then they are welcome to bring the matter to the attention of the police.

However, also inform them that any false accusations will result in you taking legal action against them for malicious prosecution.

A great day spoiled.

As for being 80m apart that is too far to reach birds going in between shooters. Had you been 40m apart you would have been able to shoot some of the birds going into his pattern.

Regarding the nit wits, I have no real advice for you as you are a sensible man other that to ignore the sad little ****.
