Dear All,

Based on some posts on other threads on this forum it seems that some have missed what BASC is delivering in its campaign to safeguard, promote and support grouse shooting.

So for those who have missed it I thought it may help if I put the links to what we have been doing over the last few weeks in one place, see below

Why are some of these blogs/comments/releases in response to attacks by anti shooting Zealots, not appearing all over the media David? Surely when the media feature a contentious issue heavily weighted to just one side, Impartiality, Natural justice and balance dictates the other side should be offered an equal opportunity to reply? Otherwise it is just propaganda intended to influence the public into one particular position! All these media organisations are responsible to a regulator, can you advise? is BASC questioning why, in the interests of impartiality, these media outlets are not requesting comment (bar the odd one line quote!) and providing equal publicity time for us to put over the opposing view? Can I also enquire whether In response to this obvious failure does BASC make formal complaint to the appropriate regulator every time these outrageously one sided unfounded claims/untrue attacks on shooting are printed, published or broadcast in the media?

Was thinking the exact same thing....

Indeed, media are supposed to report balance, but can be somewhat moot about what balance is! However, on online magazines and forums all of us can comment.

In the published media such as newspapers, sometimes we can get our response printed at the same time sometimes its a few days later

Before anyone bites, my posting was not an attack on BASC or David as their representative, it was a genuine enquiry! The majority of time we seem to see the media produce vast amounts of articles and programmes and features that reflect the anti's side? Apart from a few notable exceptions.........very little pro shooting stuff!

Perhaps that's why you felt the need to post this topic up David

Panoma, im completely with you on the view that the media train. They just show what they want.

I dont see your question as an attack and feel very similar to yourself, it does seem the the anti's get more publicity from the media, maybe due to it making more sales. But I feel that on forums or online magazines, comments are easily ignored or shouted down.

If the balance is to only air anti views then we are always on the backfoot no matter how many organisations for pro countrysports are out there.

Indeed, which is why we started our campaign before the start of the season.

Genuinely cannot say I've noticed!

I've not seen any adverts in the major press or adverts on social media, does Basc just expect the media to print these press releases?

Or has this campaign been directed at the shooting industry... trying to educate those that don't need it?

Ps still can't open links

Adverts in the major press cost many £1000's each so we do not advertise in this media, social media has run these several times and still do, the nationals have picked up on the releases and published them, and we have been on TV.

If we do not release things to the shooting press we get criticised for not doing anything, if we do send things to the shooting press we get criticised for preaching to the converted...ever felt you cant win either way? Walk a mile in my shoes...

Not noticed why you cant open the links on a mobile device...look up

David,

I know it can cost £1000's to put out things in the media, but the anti's are doing it.. So why are the BASC not?

Alot of posts on here recently is about how certain anti's are putting things in the media.

I can see how you are stuck between a rock and hard place regarding the shooting publications but surely there are other publications that you could aim at, that dobt come with mega money for a half page or full page.

Again not a attack on you but just querying how best the publicity could be spent?

As far as the mainstream media is concerned, the key objective is to try to ensure balanced comment. The key strategic issue is to get political support. Spending many £1000 on adverts in the press will not guarantee in any way political success.

What we can do and deliver on to get and maintain political support is our continued presence in Westminster and other parliaments / assemblies, and working with you, the shooters, to get you to lobby your MP directly.

This is why its so important for all of you to take part in our online campaign and to encourage others to do so

I myself have gone on and lobbied my MP on more than one occasion.

But when you have anti propaganda in the media which is seen by the public that is far more damaging to us, than us hoping to get some MP's on board. This is not just a political issue.

Alot of people see media showing the hen harrier which is an awesome BOP, and us being the people persecuting them, be it fact or fiction, its what they see when they open the paper or look online..

That is the demographic that we should be aiming at, educating them about the conservation side of what the gamekeepers and moor management are doing. The fact that places in the south of england are not managed in this way and do not have the biodiversity that the north moors do. And how managing the land is conserving animals that are at risk.

Having one or two MP's on side and a protest of thousands of people outside parliament with banners will not win our corner. Take fox hunting for an example! Majority rules...

David, I do not think we can ignore or underestimate the damage the anti's are doing to shooting by their constant virtually uncontested media misinformation assault, as for political support, in the end public opinion will drive the politicians when the chips are down NOT the other way around!...........Whilst political support is very important it is not to be relied upon......after all they are politicians! if they can get/remain in power and the price is to **** shooting over...........they will pay it in a heartbeat!...............I believe that a more concerted pro shooting media campaign to go with the political lobbying is long overdue!

Seems we are singing from the same hymn sheet ShootingEgg?

Seems that way..

I know it is not easy and I completely get the view point of damned if you do damned if you dont but social media and shooting publications is not enough. It is to focussed on us the shooter. I speak with people I work with who are higly educated in there field. If I explain I shoot to eat and to protect crop that a farmer depends on, 9/10 times I get a very good discussion out of it and also now have people who are interested in it. I have had 30 of my colleagues doing clay pigeon shooting at my local club, I put in the effort to organise an afternoon they could take part, and they got so much out of the day it is unreal. We as a community need to be Pro active... Not blinkered and focussed on political angles or dare I say it social media.

Nor do we ignore the media, that's why we are in constant contact with them pushing positive stories to counter the rubbish and promote the good stories, the economic benefits of shooting for example have been widely published for example.

We have also been on TV promoting shooting and its befits, and TV has a wider audience than the printed media I suggest. But believe it or not the media are not always the easiest to deal with...

Its not about getting a few MP's on board its about targeting our message to MP's in the best way possible and getting and maintaining cross party support for shooting, because its the MP's that make the final decisions. We will also back up our arguments with facts and not rely on simple emotive attacks with little or no substance, that is what counts.

So please, all of you, play your part and use our simple online tool to lobby

I and I'm sure many others do David.......but the real nub of the issue is the public are brainwashed by anti propaganda in the media into believing that shooting is environmentally damaging, cruel and people that shoot enjoy killing things because they are sadists!.............in my experience nothing is further from the truth!

I doubt the public are really interested in the jobs and economic benefits shooting creates, and they don't really want to know about the positive conservation contribution made by shooting interests.......because they are conditioned to think anthropomorphically of the dead creatures that shooting is responsible for!....that's why the refer to live shooting as "murder"

This is the misinformation the anti's keep pushing..........we need to counter this wherever and whenever it appears in the media
