pigeon controller Posted September 17, 2016 Report Share Posted September 17, 2016 (edited) Friday saw me going out on my own due to DB having work pressures, I had a call from Bunny Basher who had booked the day off to attend his mates stag do but it had been put back until the evening so he intended to shoot some peas on a shared permission. His previous bags were 105 and a 75 on an afternoon session. This land is shot hard and BB had four other shooters on it last time he shot. We arranged to meet at 10.00 and I was surprised that BB had a different coloured Disco. The rain stopped at approx 10.30 and we drove round the field and I chose the hide position with the wind hard off our backs. As I laid out the ten thawed bird on cradles and two on the magnet BB built the hide. We were all set up for 11.00 and the birds responded accordingly, I took a wild shot at a high passing bird and one ten yards on dropped as well much to BBs amazement. We shot steadily into the afternoon hitting some good shots and missing the slow ponderous birds in the decoys. It did not help with a whispered " Don't Miss This". At about 15.00 DB arrived as he could not work knowing that we would be having birds ,He stood down the hedge and had some fast spooked birds . BB left to go on his stag and we shot till 18.00 and picked up Two Hundred and twentysix birds which was a mega amout for a field that has been shot for the passed four or five weekends with many shooters. The idea of shooting this land was to push the birds over to some beans stubble for us to shoot on Saturday. Satuday saw us head out a 10.00 to look at the beans and peas on other farms, the only birds we could find were on some wheat stubble next to an entertainment establishment with TeePees erected next to the stubble field, we decided not to shoot as we anticipated aggravation. We decide to look at the beans we shot last week and on our way we passed an old barley stubble field which had a few birds down near a wood. We spoke to the Farmer and he confirmed that they build up in the afternoon especially when other shooters are shooting the beans. We asked if the beans had been shot and he replied twice in the week and yesterday so we decided the give the barley a go. We set up on an edge with a strong wind off our backs. It was now 12.00 and we used twelve fresh birds from the day before on spikes with two on the magnet. We had a steady run of birds coming to us and soon collected a ton of birds in the carp sack behind the hide . We then started on the second sack , we could hear shooters all round us and when they shot it brought us fresh birds. We quickly filled the second ton in the sack and we knew we were on for a mega day.We stopped shooting at 17.00 one hour early than normal as we had concerns as to the freezing capacity at home. It took us a age to pick up the birds from all round the field and behind us. We ended up with four hundred and five birds picked . This would mean we would have one thousand plus in the freezers after two weekends back home absolute magical pigeon shooting. ditchman Posted September 17, 2016 Report Share Posted September 17, 2016 have you got some sort of breeding programe going on...im lucky if i see that many in a month...never mind shot them.......... absolute commitment....if i was farmer giles i would be well chuffed.....be interesting to work out over a coarse of a year what you shot and thus what tonnage of crop you save as a result.. We did end up with thirty decoys out in the end as we added more they held off , we could not believe the number as the beans had been shot three times in the week. Definitely this particular farm always produces this time of year, they once tried to grow rape and the birds destroyed the crop over the winter that it never recovered, so they just grow cereals and beans. What is amazing that you go out every Friday, and nearly always shoot a huge bag without any prior reconnaissance in the days preceeding. Over the years we have been shooting we have built up a log in our memory bank of where the birds will be at certain times of the year. We also keep in touch with our farmers via text if they see birds as they know we will take them away in the disco. Hi Dave, no my shoulder is fine, our biggest bag was some years ago and we had to stop shooting due to freezing the birds and that was five hundred an fifty. Yes Friday was the warm up and Saturday the mega day, as we were laying the birds out for the picture we had birds trying to come in as you say unreal. I think many shooters would have run out of cartridges before achieving the total number. I wonder how " Mr Plastics" would have done in our situation???
