I recently found a receipt in the attic of a Triumph T5, theres no reg no. or anything else on it, just the make. It's for £205 with extras, his name and Feb 1949 and that's it I'm afraid. I've emailed a chap from the triumph club uk and sounds impossible to trace. Just wondered if there's anyone on here with any ideas. Thanks.

Ive not come across a photo yet,the garage was John G Nicolson ,junction road Kirkwall, and they've been gone a long time, also not sure if they were a Triumph dealer or just a second hand dealer. I could make a few phone calls to some older lads up here that might remember the bike or the garage, also there's a good vintage club here to contact also. Do you think £205 in 1949 would mean new? Thanks triumphant59, (I take it you like triumphs)?

Almost certainly, and probably included a few extras like a speedometer and pump. The 5T Speed Twin was quoted as being priced at £185 in 1950 and the Tiger 100 at £198.

Wouldn't the shipping costs have increased the price in Kirkwall too?

Hello amateur,it says on the receipt 'with extras' so you'll be right enough. And yes the shipping would have bumped it again. Must make a few phone calls tonight. I've never been into bikes myself and had a few bad experiences on my cousins one when I was very young basically it was to big for me then, and my father broke a leg long ago on one but not sure what bike it was and would never let me have one because they were dangerous! I think he had a few crashes, but finding this receipt has made me curious hmm.

You've got it, triumph cars more than bikes but if anyone's got a trident t160 sat in their shed I'd be interested!

I prefered the t150 and t150v to the t160. t160 was a fat american style the i50s were boxey euro style had an h reg four speed and a m reg five speed went all over europe on them two bikes, met my wife on the four speed in italy married in less than two months.

i went to istambull on the four speed alone and got arested for paperwork infractions. I was 18 and let me tell you it was charecter building.

There will have been a local vehichle licencing authority thhat covered kirkwall, the records may be with swansea but they may not be, they may be in a local libry as you sujest in post 9, this is your only hope and to be honest i think you will be very lucky to find the acctual bike.

If your wanting to find the bike to buy it , im not sure this is the case but this can add even more complication and will probably carry a premium in the price if it will be sold that is.

I think i would just look round for a similar bike in that case, good luck.

I think I'll be very lucky indeed to find it,and I probably couldn't afford it anyway. It would be nice if it was still on the go and I could tell the owner a bit about it. I might find out tomorrow . Like I said I've never had a bike and can't see me starting now as most lads I know with bikes had them as youngsters so got to grips with them then. The man I spoke to tonight said at that time up here a lot of boys had bikes to go to work and in the 50's scrambling started here so a lot of the bikes got cut and altered and raised etc so a lot of the old classics ended up scrambled to death and dumped. Cheers HP.

Well I've found the first registration number!!! Was at the library today and they have a beautiful big old ledger and all the reg numbers handwritten in for all the years, just amazing there's records when you think you have nout. And there for Feb 1949 was the local BS number then my fathers name and address, so I'll see if Swansea can find anything, still not overly hopeful though..

Well I got a reply back from the Dvla , basically they won't do any search for it as its not a valid reason and they have to make a balance between disclosing information and protecting privacy. I asked them if they could find out whether it's still around, been scrapped or any info at all,I didn't want names and addresses ,purely for sentimental purposes only. I guess though they might think I'd wish to find out more if it was still about. At least they gave me my £5 cheque back.

It may well be existing as a pile of rusty bits in several motorcyclists' sheds or in an auto-jumble awaiting resurrection as part of a pristine restoration

(or lash-up}.......as do most old brits. You will never know

Could well be, without frame numbers or other docs I'll never know. Might try a friendly Bobby as suggested. Also was not impressed with the triumph mc club of GB, the bike registrar told me initially I had NO chance of finding anything and there's no way triumph would have sent a bike to Orkney! Cheeky pirk! I told him I've since found the reg plate from the library, and there were lots sent up here after the war, even a triumph dealer set up here inc Honda and lots more! He never replied to that email....I spoke to some older lads who told me all about it,very interesting actually. They said a lot of the old classics were turned into scramblers, cut and altered etc then ending up in a quarry! HP
