rwade545
Trying to get an idea of what people would consider long range shooting, obviously calibre dependent. I would say over 100m for a .22lr And over about 500m with most centre fires eg .223/308/243 What are other people's opinions? Cheers
zipdog
22 lr - 90 yards plus 17 hmr - 150 yards plus 22 centrefire - 300 yards plus

Hamster
So many variables, not least the equipment, shooter competence and conditions on the day. In general I would say it's probably easier to kill larger animals at long range (say 300 yards) with centre fire because body hits will invariably cause massive wounds and loss of blood whereas .22 lr needs more accurate placement. Knowing what 100 meters actually looks like in real life I take my proverbial hat off to anyone who thinks they .22 head shoot bunnies at that range regglar. seeker
I quite like Craig Boddingtons approach "...I think long range starts when you have to abandon a dead-on hold with your center crosshair and start to figure either the holdover or the alternative aiming point" http://www.rifleshootermag.com/shooting-tips/long-range-shooting/

rwade545
Agree, very much depends in person behind him as well as equipment. Talking about target as don't like taking long shots at quarry- unless it is small varmint control with centrefire. Asking as was debating what constituents long shooting, .22-250 goes sub sonic at 600y and .308 can just about reach 1k.

Davyo
250 mtrs was my longest on a fox with 243,that was a one off in daylight. Most foxes were shot with NV so 70mtrs max.Deer ive never shot one more than 60mtrs.Rabbits with the rimmy no more than 70mtrs. Not a fan of people attempting to shoot live quarry over long distance to gain a personal best. But if your confident your going to kill it then crack on. dob
I would only be comfortable shooting foxes at 200 yards with my .223 but I am sure you chaps push the distances out a lot further, I guess it's down to confidence , I am fairly new to centre fires so would not want to wound an animal at further distances until I have a lot more experience.
