Decent Afternoon on Peas

A pea field on one of my permissions has provided a few reasonable bags all year. However, numbers had increased markedly near to harvest and I was ready to get at them . The catch was that the farmer rents out the neighbouring field to a camping club and I had to wait until they had left before i could shoot. The field is nearly on the beach with the bonus being that the pigeons had become very used to humans and were extremely receptive to the decoys. I set up at 12 noon with 20 shell decoys and started slowly, but once I had the whirly and FF5 out I was pulling in every bird that came to the field. Young birds in particular found the whirly a big pull. I had steady traffic until 4pm when the birds started to drop on the far side of the field. However, when I did get a shot, these birds lifted and flew back towards their holding wood and presented some spectacular driven shots and I'm pleased and surprised to say I hit a few!

This was also the first proper pigeon day that I took my 15 month pup Stan on. He observed most of the day patiently from the hide, with a few retrieves now and then. He also found a few in the hedge at the end of the day which I was pretty chuffed with.I finished with 71 picked and a few crows.
