Headlamps and MOT

The Landie just had it's MOT and failed on the headlights. Both work perfectly well, in fact a friend who also drives a Landie commented what good lights they were a couple of months ago. Failed because the silver at the very bottom edge of each reflector was starting to bubble. Was not aware that was part of the test, but have to go with the flow, so a quick run up to Craddocks in the morning for a new set. Looking at upgrading to the Crystal conversions. Any of you Landie drivers fitted these ..any good ?

Thought changeing lights to upgrade is illegal on MOT...?.

Think he was taking the Micky myself,Reflection would not have been impaired to that extent.

Ask the mot people,,They make the rules ,,not mechanics..

He does his job. I have no quibble really. The introduction of the MOT saved a lot of lives. I was patrolling the streets well before then and the state of some vehicles would have turned an MOT testers hair white today :-) Thanks for the heads up on bulbs because I was going to replace them as well

Used this MOT site for about fifteen years they are pretty straight bunch. I did think it was a bit much though. I am just changing the reflectors not the lamps completely. Did this from sealed back to bulbs a couple of years ago.. maybe three. Problem with bulbs is condensation and water get in there and cause this corrosion.

I'm a soft MOT tester and probably would of said get it sorted when you can, did it effect the pattern that bad ??

No, the lights were excellent. If anything the nearside was just a tad low on full beam, needed adjusting. Heh!! The motor is 30yrs old and gets to go into some interesting places, hauling wood etc etc., and all he could find apart from a slightly defective earth on a rear light was these headlights, so I didn't complain :-)

I do like good lamps on a motor. I have a pair of 9inch spots up there as well if I really need to see the size of the gravel ahead. Still have 130s in those but they are getting harder to find. Only use them off road of course.

Put led side and indicators on last year and some upper rear units for when I have a trailer on as extra illumination ... you know what trailer lights are like.

My best car is an X type Jaguar Estate AWD and the lights on that are pathetic for a relatively quick motor BUT they have height adjustment which proved invaluable last Thursday in the fog. Just turned the full beams fully down, brilliant.
