A bean stubble from the past.

Down in the Cotswolds again trying to keep the wolf from the door I drove by a field which has an amusing memory.

Seven or eight years ago at this time of year I had a barley stubble which was a dead cert. I asked a friend along but we found on the morning and heavy autumnal fog enveloping the field which refused to lift. Had I been on my own I would have amused myself until it cleared but I felt duty bound to look elsewhere.

Spying a bean stubble on land I could usually shoot I drove to see the farmer who readily gave me permission as long as I made sure it was

fine with 'a man in the village' who sometimes wandered around aimlessly looking for pigeons. The man was found and what a miserable man he was too. Anyone would have thought he owned the place given his attitude. Reluctantly he said fine go ahead, 'but there is nothing on the field'.

True enough there were no pigeons to start with but we set up when a weak line developed. The next four hours produced some truly great sporting shots and when we packed up we had picked 173 pigeons.

As we were driving out of the field the man turned up and asked how we had done. 'Could have done better' I said to which he replied 'I told you so'.
