Now i shoot a fair few pigeons by just standing in hedge rows & shooting passing birds, but have never set up a hide and decoys before. One field i can shoot on was drilled with what i think is wheat & had 200-300 birds on it Thursday. I went over my fishing lake on cormorant patrol as i have a licence to control them on this lake. Was not there long & three came in to land ,one which met 50g of no1 & the other two made a quick retreat. Then some members turned up to fish so i had a walk over the back field & set up a hide & put out some decoys. There was no flight lines that i could see but a few birds in the air so thought i'd give it a go. With a few more birds in the air now & some started to decoy setting their wings & diving in to the decoys i had some nice shots. Had a few shots at some crows that was that close i could of thrown stones at them but still managed to miss all of them :unhappy: . Packed up after 2hrs with 30 pigeons so i was well pleased with my first go with the decoys.

You will need to apply to NE listing numbers on the water & show that you are trying other ways of keeping them off you water. Also you are set a limit that can be shoot between September & April can not shoot more then one a month so if they set you a small number of birds that you can shoot you may only be able to one every two months. You can only shoot them if they are flying in to feed or are on the water not just flying over & only if there is two or more birds so as to kill one & scare the others off so they may not return. You then have to keep a log of sightings & number & date of birds that have been shot & send this in at the end of the licence term. So it is a bit of a pain in the rear but if the birds are doing a lot of damage then we have to jump though the hoops.

That sounds like a productive session and obviously your hide and decoy setup worked.

Being your first time decoying that success is great for your confidence.

Well done on persevering with the cormorant licence red tape, its a pity more don't do the same.

The black marauders are ruining lots of fisheries around the country.
