Enjoyable 50

At the end of the village are 4 fields that were drilled last week. On Thursday as I walked the dog in the afternoon I would estimate there were between 5 and 600 feeding on them. A quick text to the farmer and all was well for a go at them today. Yesterday I walked the dog again and there were even more on there and interestingly, as we walked around, they didn't seem keen to move. They just lifted as we approached and then settled down again a hundred yards away.

Today when I arrived just before 9 I couldn't believe how many were on these fields. Certainly in my limited shooting career I have never seen so many pigeons. How many I don't really know , but the sky was grey with them although there were a good number of ferrals as well.

Anyway, I set up on a promising looking hedge line and put out just 4 dead birds and another 2 on the magnet. First in was a crow, and then the pigeons came steadily but it was tricky because of the number of ferrals flying about. I had a very enjoyable few hours and managed to pick 54 wood pigeons, 3 crows and a jackdaw. I think a more experienced decoyer may have set a better pattern than me and would have bagged up. That said, I didn't shoot too badly, about 4 full boxes of cartridges and a few more.

I'd also seen similar numbers of pigeons on some maize stubble I have access to so spoilt for choice this week if I can get out again.
