My first renewal coming up and not off to a good start

My certs run out on 12th december and it was only today I sent all the documentation off 1st class recorded. Completely my own fault for not sending it off sooner.

Having had a very quick look through this section of the forum it seems these things take months! Anyone else been in this situation? As it gets closer to cert expiry is it a case of putting the shotguns, rifle and ammo in storage with an RFD until the certs eventually come back?

If your cert runs out, you can ask for a temporary cert to be issued, so you can hold on to your guns. I have had to do this in the past.

I doubt your get a temp cert if you have not sent it in the time required buy your firearms dept. I would be making provisions to store your guns if I was you matey

+1 the issuse of a sec7 is an admittance of failure buy the licencing dept.It very unlikely they are goint to shoot themselve in the foot.Get a RDF sorted.

No it's very commonplace. Basc. If they had any influence this situation wouldn't exist, would it.

i had a problem with mine on last renewal which was late. to be fair i contacted basc they said tell them to issue you a temp cert. the certificate turned up 2 days late. but this should not be happening. i did not realise it was commonplace

Thanks for the replies, yeah I thought putting it in with 5 weeks to go would be fine, until I started reading! I'd be fine with a temp cert, at least I wouldn't be paying storage fees! Out of curiosity any idea how much RFD's charge for a rifle and a couple of shotguns?

A renewal needs to be made 'in good time' for the police to be obliged to issue you with a S7 certificate. It was determined last year that good time = 8 weeks before expiry. After that time they are not obliged to issue a S7, but they may still do so depending on which way the wind is blowing on the day

If you respectfully request a section 7 temporary permit via email to the head of Firearms 10 days prior to expiry, why should there be a problem with issue?

Don't forget a section 7 does not entitle you to possess any form of expanding ammunition, you should lodge that at an RFD.

Don't make a problem, you won't get one.

Lancashire write to cert holders at least 12 weeks before expiry. The letter states that renewals must be returned at least 8 weeks before the licence expires. If not then they won't guarentee renewal before expiry and all guns will have to be put into storage/disposed of at a dealer of be liable to prosecution.

I got mine sent back the following working day after the notification in October so hopefully it should be renewed by the Jxn Expiry.

There has been a change to legislation of the Policing and Crime bill very recently that allows an expired certificate to remain valid for a period of 8 weeks beyond the date of expiry, however i'm not sure when this takes effect from and if it would be applicable in your circumstances. A phone call to your FEO may be beneficial.

As mentioned above 8 weeks has become the accepted and agreed time by which an applicant is seen to have his renewal application in 'good time'. In this case the issued cert will retain it's validity for a further 8 weeks to stop the police having to issue a s7, so no disadvantage to the cert holder and no burden of duty on the police to issue a s7.

I have no idea how practical this will be if the additional 8 weeks is contingent on having the renewal submitted in good time, how do they police that without an extra administrative overhead?

Edit to add: I see a forum post about that very thing here http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/topic/346813-key-improvements-in-firearm-law/

How is it that some arbitory decisions seem to be sprung up out of thin air by feos and departments that have no basis many law and the orgs that are supposed to represent our interests do absolutely nothing about it? How long and how many people was it before all of that nonsense about mentors was dropped. Right from the off someone should have thought"who is a mentor? What qualities and what qualifications do these people have? Where are they getting these qualifications and what validity is there in any of all this"?
