Flighting inland duck - in the day

I know most of you guys on this part of the forum are coastal fowlers but thought here would probably be the best place for advice!

We have a pond with about 40/50 wild mallard on it every day, been feeding it for the last month or so and it usually works well for an evening flight. For some reason this year though they are using it as a day roost and none are coming in at dusk.

We can't drive the pond as it is so open, so what is best? I was thinking of walking them off in the morning and then sitting tight, as they tend to try and come back in in ones and two's after being scared off when I feed it.

Or of course getting there before daylight? But i'm not sure if they are coming in whilst its dark in one big group!

I suppose i've probably answered my own question to a point, but thought some of you would have better knowledge of wild duck than I do!!

Cheers

On an old shoot I used to have a pond that the duck ( mallard ) would spend the day on. We shot with them in three ways. Feeding up a pond 1\4 a mile away and flight the duck coming into there at dusk. The only problem was the duck could hear shooting on the second pond on calm evenings and once shot at a few times would sit tight on their day resting pond so we had to wait for rough evenings before we flighted them. We did try morning flighting the duck as they came into their day roost with great success. The problem with this was that it badly scared the duck and we would have to give them at least 4 weeks before the numbers built up again . Perhaps the best shooting came from walking the duck off mid afternoon without a shot being fired. The duck would sit on a nearby lake for some time before returning , but the duck would start to return within an hour and being wary from being disturbed gave very sporting shooting.

  • 4 weeks later...

Yes as above . I have a few ponds and walk duck of at about 11/12 noon when its getting dark at 4 pm ,then feed it ,takes a hour maybe less ,then back to hide up about 3/3.30pm .. But Only shoot pond once every three weeks ,but feed were needed and walk off every day if possible as have two ponds does allow me to shoot a bit more often ,but to be honest tend to go down to marsh as prefer trying to outwit them in their own back yard ! .. but its nice to see duck winging in across the hedgerow to drop down to feed as it gets dark on my ponds ..Can sometimes be a fair few as they tell their mates that food is avalible . I know of two ponds near to river that get hammered hard ,I am uncomfatbul with the no of shots I hear when its being shot and the amount of times as well ..I think the reason for that is I am a wild fowler and dont see the need for that type of heavy shooting which is at mainly wild birds ..and as I can get plenty if I need to , I know its not dog in manger attitude ...

Riptide

PS Forgot to say the weather and the moon can also change their flighting ..
