Long range Rimfie 17Hmr

Recommended Posts

Any one here dabble in long range Rimfie shooting wouldn't mind going longer than what I am shooting at the moment 150 yards. What all would I need eg wind readers that sort of thing or would I be better to join a range and learn form people that know a thing or two. Thoughts lads?

I've used my hmr to 250 accurately however I've found the round doesn't expand at that range. If punching paper get some practise in. More you practise more you know at what ranges effects what. Btw, I only use a rangefinder. Furthest shot on a rabbit was about 252 yards on a lovely still day.

I really enjoy "varminting" as it's known, you'll need a decent rangefinder, preferably a wind meter and definitely a ballistics app on your phone. The app I use is iStrelok, you put all the data for your chosen cartridge in, then search the huge list of scopes to find the scope you use, then put the range, wind etc... and it will give you corrections in clicks, MOA, MRAD whatever you want. Great fun.

Why do you want to do this? I don't know of any sort of competition range shooting for the 1.7 hmr. Now if you just want to shoot rabbits at long range why is this necessary. I am not a fan of the 17 hmr because it seems to rip stuff to bits at closer ranges but not have the impact poke out at long range (out to 300) for fox. I can head shoot rabbits at about 80 paces freehand with my old modified 22rf and I don't really need to shoot any further than that and most rabbit targets Will be somewhere in the 30 to 50 pace range. Now if I use a 17 hmr at the shorter ranges the rabbits look like road kill. There are 467 to chose from on guntrader at the moment so I don't know if that is an indicator of the calibers popularity or gun turn over due to the few years that they have been on the market. I am really on the fence as to the use of this caliber. Expand your ideas as to your use of this caliber. I'd love to know your thoughts.

I want to expand the distance I shoot my 17Hmr that's the idea lol I am not one bit interested in how many is for sale or at how many paces you can free shoot rabbits in the head fella! If your not here to answer the question I asked go argue with someone who gives a monkeys 👍🏻

Must look into that lad thanks! Just wanted to check out the scope on what I needed before I go buy something at £100 bucks that's not going be used. 👍🏻

Do you not use a wind reader at that distance if you only have a range finder ?

Nope, just a rangefinder. As long as I know what the breeze is if any at all I'm all good. Obviously if it's blowing a gale I stick to 70 yards max as there's too much drift after that and part of where I shoot is in a valley so the wind comes around and makes shooting rather difficult due to changing direction. I thought about measuring wind but with enough practise there's not much point unless shooting a lot further. Juts hold over values and a little left or right depending :)

A totally uncalled for and aggressive post in response to Fortune giving his opinion and the reason he has come to such a conclusion. I am not going to get drawn into a pointless ping pong of insulting posts so don't bother responding with venom (although I no doubt that you will) - I will not bother responding to any of your posts. Fortune is a long standing and respected member of this forum and your reply was totally out of order.

Hang about, 'you' asked for 'any thoughts'.....

Fortune gave 'his thoughts' and you attacked him for 'his thoughts' even though you quite clearly asked for them.

Such bizarre polarity.

Nowt as strange as folk.

Ive no horse in this race but when i looked at Fortunes post i thought what had him head shooting rabbits at 80 paces freehand with a modified .22 have to do with the op wanting thoughts on what he needs to do for shooting longer ranges with a .17hmr.

I thought sitting on the fence would mean a pretty neutral view but it seems that he dismisses the calibre which he says at the start.

Agreed, polite narrative or ignoring non salient posts is better than such a reply.

I have no horse either, but I do find common decency on this forum becoming a rare thing.

Thing is I use HMR too, but didn't find fortunes post offensive enough to spill someone's pint to start a fight.

I also think the common decency is getting in short supply but then when you see some threads thrown so far off topic i can see why to a degree.

I wouldnt get upset by the post either but i would wonder why it was posted when it just downs the caliber and not really the thoughts he was asking for.
