hi folks,i made a homemade nv rig for use with my .22 lr.got a cheap bullet camera and t20 ir torch,it works well out to 100yards,can see rabbits,i now want to extend that range for my 223,so if i up graded the t20 to say t50/t67, would that extend the range to say 200yrds,?or would i have to change the camera as well?thanks

thanks GS,what torch would be good to about 200 yrds?i believe the t50/t67 are alot larger than the small t20,is there a small ir torch like the t20 that would be good?or can i upgrade/boost my t20?

Depends on what torch you have, some have interchangeable heads,I have some cheaper ones that dont.

Some have a better 'pill' you get what you pay for.

The bigger the head ,the more focus you get (your torch does focus Im assuming!)

Im not sure what you mean by 'bullet camera' though.

hi,i bought the t20 from ludicrous lumens, yes it has interchangeable heads, and it can focus,a bullet camera is a small long thing something like a shotgun cartridge in shape but smaller.

In that case a T38 head or bigger would help light wise.

But your biggest let down is the camera, a decent E700 camera set up and screen would give you the resolution and clarity for the ranges you are looking at.

Im sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly to advise/sell you one :)

thanks rw,the build i done i found on www.nightvisionuk under the heading(see below),its fine for my .22lr,very clear out to 100 yards,so was hoping i could boost the t20 to get me out to 200 yrds,or so,or buy a simular small lightweight torch that would

sub £50 low budget add on build (build list & how to)

Thats an interesting build for not a lot of money!

I thought such a camera was a bit dearer than that.

The good news is sticking an E700 on to that rig should be easy.

Plus if you can cope with the physical size of a T67 AS, they are the dogs danglies.

I bought one from the torch factory, with a T38 head too ,for about £50 delivered.

I have a T38 torch with a T series Oslon black Ultra "AS" insert fitted and is good for 200 yards. Don't know if you can fit the insert in a T20 though. Speak to Ludicrous Lumens.

I do not have the 'SURE' E700 camera, but similar.

The rig you built was an agreeably low cost option that did what you wanted for rimfire ranges: More distance is going to involve more cost for better performing kit. Below are some of the options open to you.

You basically have a choice of blasting more IR light into the eyes of the quarry which is proportionally less covert - or improve both the camera and IR for full 200 yards I/D.

The T20 does not have changeable heads - you may be mistaken about what torch it is.

A T20 can be up graded with a Black Sun IR pill from Clive Ward, as an easy to acheive moderate cost first option that will struggle to acheive full 200 yards with the cheap camera - especially if the IR filter is still on it.

Or up size the torch with Black Sun T50 IR from the same bloke for better performance at more cost. The second one's have a more powerful LED driver but shorter battery duration. You will likely need to carry a spare torch battery.

Further up size the torch:

You may need to up grade the torch mount if the heavier torch heads flop downwards if you are using cheap fixings

Fit a better camera in addition to any of the above - but I wouldn't want to get involved in undoing all that sticky tape etc. :)

A further option is sell the existing rig to another rimfire user and start again

As above, upgrade the camera to a E700 and you should be getting the range you are looking for.

This. My build uses the e700 and a t20 with the new pill and I can see rabbits to 250-300 yards. Eye shine further yet. I can see to 250 ish with my Mtc and a lot further with my nikko stirling. The camera is the heart of the build after all

thanks very much lads for your help, dave g,yes you are right about the heads on t20,meant to say the pills can be changed.also reading up on the build i did i see that the op said (we used an as pill l67 behind this one and it was good for 400+ yards in decent condition,if that is correct, then i would not need to change the camera, just the torch since im looking for ranges to around 200 yrds,so if i up graded my t20 with a Black Sun IR pill from Clive Ward, then i should be well able to get my required 200 yrd range with the camera i have, what do you think?

Not likely to get the full 200 in my opinion with such a cheap camera - especially if the IR filter is still glued to the sensor. Most of us on the night vision forum site try to steer people towards the £60 E700 for a very good reason. Three years ago most of us were using camera's costing well over £100 second hand from Isreal.

As Dave says, the E700 is the camera and it getting cheaper so no compromise. If you really want distance than use a NV spotter and keep the rifle Nv on a sweet spot. If your field craft is ok and your set ups right, there is no need to take challenging shots anymore, thats the whole point of NV.I very rarely took a fox more than 70/80 mtrs. (use to have to shout to stop em running in too close) Concentrate on clarity of the unit out to 100mtrs, as long as you can identify a back stop your good to go.

Clarity being the operative word ,the E700 will give you that.

Also make sure your screen has enough resolution to take advantage,200x320 pixels isnt good enough past 100 yards, the more the merrier.

Plus if youre really going for it ,a near eye display makes the whole thing more compact, about £100 though.
