Chilli growing

I used to grow them a few years ago, they are really easy to grow. When I first grew them I got a kit for Christmas, it came with pot seeds and compost and instructions of course. But after that I got a window box and some seeds (different heats don't get them mixed up) and went from there.

 

I think February is when they say to plant, but as long as you keep them in a warm light place and keep the watered (they love drinking) then anytime is fine.

 

You will need to transfer them into bigger pots or plant ouside (when hot enough) as they grow, then enjoy your spoils.

What sort of varieties are you looking to grow? The 'annuum' varieties such as Jalapeno and Cayenne can be started later than the 'chinense' and 'frutescens' varieties. I will be growing the following varieties this year:

Annum

 

De Cayenne

Fuego F1

Jalapeno

Numex Twilight

Padron

Poblano

Super F1

 

Chinense

 

Carribean Antillais

Habanero Carribean Red

Habenero Orange

Paper Lantern

 

Frutescens

 

Demon Red

Tabasco

 

 

I'm hoping to start the Annuums and Frutescens off in my heated propagator this weekend. The Annums will wait until February I think. All of them need to be raised indoors until a minimum temperature of 10c can be guaranteed in a greenhouse/polytunnel/cloche.

 

For starters I would try a few Jalapeno and Cayenne and perhaps a Hungarian Hot Wax. If you are into the super hots such as reapers etc, these are harder to germinate and it may be worth buying plug plants unless you have a heated propagator.

 

Be warned, it's addictive!

I have grown them outside but had best results in our garden room which gets plenty of sunlight. Yes you need to keep them well watered and suggest the hanging basket compost as best as it retains water better. I am told that the better sunlight they get the better the 'flavour' if that's what you could call it. Still have some dry hanging from the beam in the kitchen.
