Sha Bu Le
Went to PO to post a letter, a woman was at the cash point machine. When I was leaving the pillar box and passing the PO door the alarm went off followed by a 12 bore being fired. Knew what it was at once and backed off. The woman at the ATM did not know and was walking towards the two toe rags who had tried to rob the PO. So inept they got in each others way, the shot gun carrier dropped it around 4 yards from me and pointing at my legs. Think it was a Remington either a semi or a pump. If the damn thing had one in the breech and the impact had caused a discharge it would have likely taken my feet off. Apparently 3 shots had been fired. The post mistress (had been behind the counter window), thank goodness for armoured glass The toe rag fired point blank into the window. The ATM women was still uncertain what to do so I grabbed her and dragged behind the pillar box for shelter. The blaggers started to run again and bumped into each other once again. Muppets was not in it. but they managed to disappear. Anyhoos cops turned up followed by AR , and started blocking local streets off. For what point not sure they were long gone. Spent another two hours giving statements. Doubt the cops will find them but I hope they do. Lord Geordie
That's mental! Had to get my deposit somehow It's a tad worrying that they were so brazen! Hopefully they will be rounded up toot suite and handed a good custodial sentence Feel sorry for those concerned, this will no doubt make a few very paranoid for the time being. Sha Bu Le
If they headed for Pennywell As the Chronicle reported, there are several side roads off Hylton Rd which they could have taken. Some lead to other parts of the town, others to Houghton and eventually Durham others still; to South Shields and Newcastle and lots of smaller places in between. May not have been out of towners, The post office is on a very small shopping area and the traffic is mostly local. Dare say the police would have the main roads around the area covered. Did not see the car myself, was behind the pillar box. No reports of anyone arrested when a policeman came to my house for a statement maybe 30- 40 minutes after I left the scene. Perhaps getting on for 2 hours and after the incident. Totally mental, the PO was winding down for day, quite a lot of local residents get last minute stuff there, anyone could have been killed.. Edit to add:- They tried to break into the ATM from inside the PO which has a small off door shop to one side of the main business and where the ATM is located. Turns out this was incorrect, they tried to get into a till on the sweetie shop side. Also removed ref to topping up ATM they now have a security firm do it. Edited to add 2 men arrested this morning in an area about just mile from the P.O. One was injured, sustained during the robbery. I said they were muppets wonder if he shot himself with ricochets or similar. Well done the boys in blue. team tractor
I had similar around 15 years ago I walked in s post office to buy some food. The woman didn't say a lot to me and I thought she was very rude. Turned out the van I watched wheel spinning off as I walked in had just robbed it at gun point. 10 seconds earlier I'd of been inside there. This is a village shop /post office so no one else was close by.
NickS
I used to live above and behind a post office in London. Coming out of my door one afternoon I could hear a lot of very aggressive shouting so dialled 999 to report what sounded like a robbery in progress and waited. After 10 minutes or so an unarmed woman police officer arrived on her own to see what was happening. To be fair, it turned out to be a domestic but it didn't sound like that and if it hadn't been, I wonder what could have happened. No helicopter seen or heard..........may have been busy elsewhere??? Maybe the police got intel from some cctv's nearby and knew them. or got their car reg.
