There is plenty of jap stuff on my shoot but when we need to get something to the far reaches of the shoot and if it's a bit boggy they all look to me to do it, as they don't don't want to get stuck or even get their trucks dirty. I bought a Discovery with 80k on the clock, done another 70k in last 6+ years and it's been a very good car regardless of what the antis have said on here. Walker570 Posted February 3, 2017 Report Share Posted February 3, 2017 Purchased my 1998 90 about 9 yrs ago with a supposed 70 thou on the clock. Replaced the V8 3.5 fitted and the gearbox and fitted a 4ltr V8(3964) plus an LT85 box. Stainless exhaust, plus two CherryBombs. It gets used hard and has only required the needs of Green Flag twice. Once when the accelerator cable broke and once when the internal clutch mechanism fell apart. No fancy all dancing electronics to go wrong and on LPG it returns the equivalent of 34mpg money wise. In with Brian Tonks Land Rover for a new galvanised chassis next month. Not many places I can't go with it. It does curtail conversation on the motorway when cruising at the legal limit, so what? When it gets dirty I just power wash it inside and out Done close to 100,000 since I have had it. Mine is an N reg 300tdi and ive had no issues other than advisories for th alst 4 MOTs about the rear crossmember. That was swapped this year. Other than that no problems for a 20 yr old vehicle. Once these Jap motors start to rot, how are they going to refurbish those? The old Landies are like giant Meccano sets, they never die. My Blingo wasn't man enough to get me and the mole traps down a steep, deeply rutted and slimy track. I'd been all over the fields, but the track was a step too far. The farmer had offered me a quad or Landy. As it was blowing a hooley and pelting it down with rain I opted for the latter and I was reminded of why I've never had one. Cockpit the size of an F1 car. Three foot of dead space over the gearbox. Dashboard where you can't see the dials. Rear seats or luggage space, but not both. And an engine that might have powered the Ark. Red-dot Posted February 3, 2017 Report Share Posted February 3, 2017 (edited) Somewhere in the UK and the rest of the world a Defender is saving someones life whether it be mountain rescue, police, coastguard or RNLI. An ICON like no other. A family heirloom and member reflected in almost unkown positive residuals and they are reliable if driven sympathetically and maintained correctly. E.G. My ten year old 90XS is now worth nearly what i paid for it and with a blast of water still looks like a recent vehicle. Jap are good (i have a L200) but date annually and still using leaf springs and drum brakes so you can't say they have moved with the times either? They will all hold value, if you pay 5k and keep it nice it will be worth that in years to come. Values are high at the moment, there are a lot of chancers out there asking silly money. Do some research and ask about the landrover forums, you will get a better idea than someone saying I had one once and to buy jap!!!
