I always make an effort to retrieve all pigeons that I shoot, no matter what the crop.

Same as

Also to the OP crop's will have Badger-Fox- Deer to name 3 regularly walking in the crops. In my long shooting life I've yet to have a land owner tick me off for crop damage and that's Shooting over many standing ripening crop's

I would go along with the above , I have now got to the stage where I very much doubt I would go shooting pigeons , or any winged game come to that without taking a dog, as I get as much enjoyment seeing my dog retrieve the birds I have shot as I do shooting them in the first place .

This is not to say I let him retrieve every pigeon I shoot because that's not the case , the ones laying in sight I pick up myself , and any out of sight or wounded then its a job for the dog .

A word of warning , be carful when your shooting laid corn as the dogs paws can get bits in between the toes , resulting in a visit to the vets and be carful on rape stubble as the short stalks can injure the dogs eyes and cuts on the belly , having said that , I haven't had any problems in either crop but that is not to say injuries don't happen , as a lot of know they do .

It would depend a lot on the crop and the time of year, your not really going to do a lot of damage to rape this time of year if you are sensible but if shooting over peas just before harvest you or your dog could do a lot more damage than the pigeons. I have been asked to shoot over peas or rape just before harvest and leave shot birds.to save to much crop damage.
