17 HMR or 22 wmr for foxing

Neither. Yes both will kill a fox but not a out and out Foxing calibre.

Personally I'd go for one of the .22 Center Fire but no doubt you'll get plenty advising .17 .20 Calibre again all will kill.

If i was restricted to one dedicated Foxing rifle I'd choose .223 for many reasons

A change in the farming practises made the WMR redundant for fox using it for close work around the free range chickens and duck, now just use the Hornet as I can take my time as the birds have gone. To replace it, but now simply for rabbit, I got the HMR which I think for the bunnies is superior. Never again will I use it on a fox.

I have hmr conditioned for fox and have shot many at ranges within the capabilities of the rounds used.

only you know what circumstances you are going to use them. if kept sensible then either will kill fox.

as previously stated, if it's purely for fox then go centrefire.

No to the 17HMR anyway, the 22Rim Mag will work but I would suggest under 100yrds to be certain of a humane shot on a fox. 17 Rem or any of the 22 centre fires far more preferable and if you think 22 Hornet then why not go for the 222 ...the cost of the rifle is about the same and cartridges are minimally different in price.

Same as any other rifle, within sensible range any will kill a fox outright, if a dedicated fox rifle on usual ground I would go CF but my HMR has killed a fair number of foxes a 100 yards and under, for my ground with fairly small fields, 3-5 acre average I couldn't really warrant a CF over the HMR for it, honestly I can count on one hand a fox I missed out on because I don't have a CF, plus field craft can get you into range to take up some slack on bigger fields..

17 hornet is the minimum I would recommend, certainly at sub 100 yards I have yet to have a runner. But no rimfire is really 'up to the job', though plenty will claim it is. I have personally seen too many people attempt this only to wound and have the quarry limp away to a slow and lingering death. This, as hunters and pest controllers, is not something that I find acceptable.

Centre fire only for fox in my opinion, 17hh, 204, 222, 223, 243 they'll all do the job admirably.

Any reason you're so keen on sticking to rimfire? Cost wise, .22 Hornet can be reloaded for similar money and moderates just as well. I'd have that as the absolute minimum. Realistically unless there's a reason to stay small, just get a .223...

Edit. Cost wise, Prvi Hornet rounds cost about a tenner more per 50 than WMR or HMR. That's only 20p per shot, and it's money well spent on quarry the size of fox.
