Hi everyone,

I needed some new pegs for my shell decoys, and decided to try making a few myself. I had the materials lying around in the garage (garden canes, pop rivets, superglue and kitchen towel) but I'm guessing that each one of these costs something less than 20p to make. A wee 4mm drill hole through the shell's back receives the pop rivet with enough room to let the decoy bounce just a little in the breeze. A wee coat of matt grey spray paint should stop the rivet from flashing in the sunlight.

I'm sure I won't be the first person who's come up with this, but quite pleased with the idea. Will try them out on Wednesday.

I like innovation. Neat idea. I still have some shells about, I'll try that idea.

Just made up some old hacksaw blade pecker springs for a day on Wednesday. Some lengths of scrap timber, slotted to take 6 inches of hacksaw with 4 inches as the spring. The decoy end is 4 inchs and cut to fit tight in the oblong slot in the decoy body. The other end is about 12 inches and sharpened to push in the ground.P40ed them in as a fix. Took the white plastic caps from old spray cans and cut the tops into quarters then pop riveted them either side of the decoy neck as vanes so the slightest breeze will push them back and forth. Being brilliant white they should also show up as the neck markings. Tried them out with artificial wind, my compressor line and they rock back and forth. 20 to 40 mph winds forecast for Wednesday so we will see how they work.

I used some of the metal banding that's used to secure building blocks. Cut into strips and attached to canes. Then a small slot cut into the decoy, and insulation tape wrapped around the banding to stop the decoy slipping down on it. The banding is usually free of charge from most builders merchants.

Yep, that would work as well. May be a little less stiff than hacksaw blades, so shorter space between decoy and peg. I like home innovation.
