JDog Posted February 23, 2017 Report Share Posted February 23, 2017 After walking the dog early this morning I had a number of choices. One was to return to bed (which is usually rewarding) and another was to head out into the considerable wind and try for some pigeons (which is usually never rewarding). So out into Doris it was. No self respecting pigeon was going to be out in the windy fields. Shelter would be the key to finding any pigeons. Two fields were of interest but I couldn't imagine keeping a hide up in either in those conditions so they were discounted. A long belt of trees was a possibility and when a banger went off and a few birds headed towards it I decided to give it a go. Jasper and I simply stood 40 m from the leeward end of the wood and waited for some action. When the banger went off again pigeons headed my way and I shot two. I was actually quite well sheltered from the raging storm and being in the wood was not the slightest bit uncomfortable so I decided to stay for a while. That while lasted for three hours almost during which time I shot and picked 16 pigeons. To be fair they were not difficult as they were battling against the wind over the tree tops. I finished my jobs by about 3 o clock and headed to a small roost wood that has been quiet for the last month or so.....the wind brought some great shooting for an hour and a half, just put 14 birds in the freezer. Did you make it to a roost wood? Good result. I arrived at the roosting wood at 4:30 to find trees crashing around and no pigeons. I beat a hasty retreat.
