Corvids

Well this trip was nearly a disaster - although all turned out well in the end

I managed to leave my cartridges at home :o and after driving for 1 hour (nearly there) I realised something important was missing :yp: B) . Fortunately I had my SGC with me today and the gunshop was open and only a 15 minute detour - definitely a Phew !! moment

So once sorted with ammo it was time to set up, conditions were good on arrival, a steady breeze and a little overcast & plenty of corvids about  , as I was on grass today I decided to drive the field clear then set up.

I picked a spot with sitty trees to the left, open areas in front and right and plenty of cover behind & the wind from my back, as good as you will find here

I set up with four cardboard cut-outs (well, a little plywood sprayed matt black) & two rubble sack corners on sticks (I think the yanks call them texas rags)......remembering the phrase "It's only crazy if it doesn't work!!!!!" I got into position :/

Soon they came....they liked the rags flapping in the wind....from the woods in front, and differing directions as the wind changed. I did put a bouncer out but they seemed put off and with shifting wind direction I was not too keen on repositioning all the time. I had a number of driven crows, which was nice and as the wind changed and they came in from the left, I was able to get ready as they passed by the trees. A good range of shots, and good practice for 1st September when the pond is a duck pond

The end bag was a respectable 22 including 3 woodies.

I'll be going again soon.

Cheers

Can you expand on these please, I'm a noggin and never seen any of either the cut outs or the flappy bag corners. Would be nice to be able to make some. :yp:

nice bag;i shoot on a permission with a duck pond very similar to your pic and has carp in it about 5lbs; so can shoot pigeons; duck;and catch carp from same spot :good:

yes, good mixed sport, a mate shoots a pond a couple of fields over & has a fishing rod stored there so carping & the odd passing pigeon are a regular for him.

I have no idea what a noggin is !

Anyway, it really is as simple as it sounds, cut out some plywood 6-8mm ish is ok in crow feeding & lookout (upright) positions, a jigsaw, hacksaw, coping saw will all work fine & spray matt black- that's it !

When cutting out just remember to have 1-2" for sticking into the ground.

When birds fly overhead, the decoys dissappear from (the crows) view - making them turn for a second look - like "Where did they go?"

for the bags, any heavy duty black bag will be ok, mine are sunbaked so matt in appearance - glossy would probably be ok.

Just cut off the corners in a set square triangle shape & hang over sticks.

As long as they move a little in the wind & don't blow away you are up & running.

Good luck

A return trip in the middle of the day had the corvids pouring into the new dung heap & although I wasn't planning a shooting session today I did have the shotgun & cut outs / bags in the car - but no net & no hide poles.

So..... let's see what we can do

The birds were keen so I set out the decoys & sat in the tran lines
