Haven't heard a Cuckoo or seen a Swallow yet , way to cold at the moment along the East coast , but as a compensate I do hear the booming of a Bittern , my hearing is not that good but I can hear it from a fair distance , and as a bonus , every so often I see it on the wing , never seen a young one or two flying together .    MM

Hi John, I`ve never seen seen a bittern but have heard a few out on the marsh over the years.

Saw and heard my first cuckoo of the year yesterday.

  2. I got quite excited the other day as I saw from a distance a field of recently drilled maize covered in `pigeons`. On closer inspection it was very clear that they were mostly stock doves with only one or two pigeons down feeding. Most frustrating. That field has now been gleaned of all the maize on the surface and not a bird to be seen. They (whether pigeons or stock doves) don`t take long to clear whatever has been left by these modern drills.

Oh well, perhaps harvest time will attract the woodies.

Just looked this up and it’s patent No. 330129 taken out by  Charles Bowerman and Ernest Crump.

    Will post details later.

Attached details of the patent for the forward trigger safety.

Will advise the date a bit later when I`ve found it.

  4. The few times that I have been to Beccles, Robert Tilney’s shop has always been shut. It does look an interesting place to have a browse round and appears to be a haven of nostalgic memorabilia.

Mixed views on Robert I know, but apparently his father was a good gunsmith.

    Still a good watch though.

    Thanks for posting Button.

Hello, It was a tongue in cheek remark so hope the PW members not to offended, is that his name OB ??, i watched the first series as it was new and interesting , not so sure now, , i have welded a few but many years ago but these were steel tines, i was always getting asked to fix some thing metal or replace a plastic item to metal, the favourite was on the rotary washing line dryers when they first come out on sale, any way perhaps Sussex Boy could up date on progress of fixing his favourite garden fork ??

Hi OPP, I realise it was a tongue in cheek remark but just checking whether that was the guy you meant.

I know that The Repair Shop is very orchestrated but still find it good to watch, especially that Suzie Fletcher, she could tan my hide any day:whistling:.

Sorry to the OP for slightly derailing his thread.

Always use a fishing brolly when its raining, a bitter wind or shooting blacks.

Pictures below, pigeon shooting and it was a bitterly cold wind but the brolly helped keep the wind off my back.

It certainly worked for you on that day.

    Thanks for posting.

In Kenzie Thorpe book The Wild Goose Man he recommend to cut the eyelids off a dead Pigeon , I know they have got good eyesight , but removing the eyelids is a bit extreme to say the least

Surely to leave the eyelids on a dead decoy would represent a pigeon having a nap between feeding and be more natural 🐦

I’m surprised you haven’t thought of that John 😂

    🤦😆 You win a virtual 🥃 😁

I’ve awarded myself a glass of red wine 🍷 for being an inch out. I think that JKD probably knows what wine it’ll be 👍.

My first 12 bore was also a BSA Snipe, got it second hand for £13 in 1972,today I couldn’t even give away a gun like that! Yet then it was weeks wage to many adults!

If I recall, I paid £11 for my second hand Snipe which must have been in 1961. I remember saving up the money earned from selling stalked rabbits with the .410.

I`m not sure whether they wore that well as the action was some sort of alloy with a black coating.
