  1. on the question of muntjac damaging crops, last year a farmer friend of mine had a visit of about 20 muntjac on a field of young sugar beet one night and they destroyed about 5 acres, so he had to electric fence the field to save the rest. having seen the damage myself i can definitely tell you that they can damage crops.
  2. yonic ive followed your tip and ordered the anniversary kit from cabelas, can you tell me if you received the modern reloading book with your kit
  3. i use an english game gun for driven game and pigeon bored imp and half, i agree that fibre must be the choice for environmental reasons. but i also think the very first responsibility all us shooters have is to kill our quarry humanely and quickly and that is why i will always use plastic wads, for me they definitely kill better than fibre. (and yes i have tried lots of different fibre cartridges)
  4. thanks chaps , it looks like its thumbs up for lee loading gear
  5. I'm thinking about reloading 223 bullets, ive never loaded cf ammo before and i have been looking at some prices of loading eqpt. and it seems that the lee company make all the gear at much cheaper prices than any other, this interests me because i wont be loading vast quantities of rounds. my question to any experienced loader is as they are cheaper than the rest is it good equipment?
  6. mine is a stainless rifle so i went for silver scope and silver rings , looks good , the trouble is THE FLAMING BUTLER CREEKS ARE BLACK
  7. looks good, was it achieved using a bench rest or a bipod or some other?
  8. strange thing cleaning....Ive watched several dvd,s and read some articles on cleaning and nearly all of them differ in what they tell you, a few weeks ago my first shot at a fox after cleaning was a 100yd easy shot which i cleanly missed. after about an hour i had a second shot at another at 150yds this time spot on hit exactly where i aimed, i know my rifle is accurate and was worried for that hour and very relieved after the second shot....has anybody had the same thing happen?
  9. i have had the same rifle for a few months now and already it has accounted for a few foxes, interesting you talk about the trigger i use the set trigger all the time and never give the normal trigger pull a thought, i use hornaday v max 40 gn bullets the gun shoots them spot on accurate , the bolt on mine is a not so smooth but i think it will get better as i use it.
  10. sounds like the tika and remmington are good rifles, i have a cz 527 in 223 and it is very accurate. if i can just add that i have had a cz rifle in various calibres for 30 years and never had any trouble at all. so maybe there are lots of very good makes out there in 223. perhaps you should be asking if anybody can tell of a make you should steer clear of
  11. as i said at the start of this topic i like the fact that my unmoderated rifle is nice to handle when shooting from a vehicle and as a varmint it has a heavy barrel so i dont notice too much barrel flip but if i add a moderator, how much longer will it make the rifle? i do not wish to shorten the barrel before fitting.
  12. what about balance? when a gun is designed and built surely balance is a major consideration to be thought of. does adding a moderator affect this or am i just getting a bit to silly.
  13. ive had my new 223 for a few months now, when i first got it the plan was to fit a moderator but at the time i thought i would spread the cost and fit it later, i use it mostly for lamping fox from a 4x4 but i am now thinking not to bother. its a 527 varmint and i think quite a neat little gun to use from a vehicle, i fitted a mod to my last rifle a hornet and it did cut the noise a lot but in the dead of night it still seemed quite loud. so i am wondering weather we all seem to go for a mod as some sort of fashionable accessory, looking at some shooting videos on u tube it seems as if the Americans have never heard of them, thats not to say we should follow what they do......so i ask moderators yes. no. sometimes. what do you all think?.
  14. i baught a 223 527 varmint about 3 months ago and it is a very well put together rifle, the scope i use is a hawke 2.5-10x56 ir. when i baught it i wondered if the ir was a bit of a gimik but 10 days ago i was foxing in a gale force wind one night and i shot a fox at 150yds which was sitting in a furrow all i could see was its head so turned on the ir and put the dot on the target and the fox never moved any more. so an ir may be worth a thaught. on the subject of bullets i have been trying lots of different makes and weights and i am leaning towards horniday v max 40gn they are very fast and flat, i zero at 150yds and have the same aim point at 200 or 50 but having said all that all the other ones i tried performed more or less the same but the vmax just had the edge with accurcy , the gun seems to like any bullet, hope this helps
