  1. zipdog the bases for this claim is on articles that i have read mostly on u.s. sites that state a shorter varmint barrel does not vibrate or osculate as much as a longer thinner one when the gun is fired and i don't know if you reload your own cartridges but if you study reloading tables you will see that the fastest loads are never the most accurate so the reduced velocity from a shorter barrel may contribute to accuracy as well and as i never shoot at anything beyond around 300yds and mostly from a vehicle a more compact set up meets my needs perfectly
  2. If you do end up fitting a mod, i have just bought a tikka 243 and tried two mods, a PES which quietened the rifle a lot but made it very long and not so good for use from a vehicle, the other which i kept was a compact wildcat 8, not so quiet as the PES but the over barrel fitting made it a better choice for my needs. The rifle has the short 20in varmint barrel which seems to be very accurate and yes you do loose a little velocity (about 40fps an inch so I'm told) but charlie doesn't seem to notice...by the way i have read some articles that argue that a short barrel can be more accurate than a longer one, don't know what others think.
  3. Thanks for the replies, rifle ordered today (standard trigger)
  4. just ordered a tikka t3 varmint 243 and noticed that i can get an optional set trigger which i use on my cz 527 and like it. can i ask other tikka users what they think of the standard tikka triggers? as I'm not sure weather to go for standard or set...thanks
  5. i go with the 1-12 twist, and as for the cartridge i go for the 40g v max for fox, its fast very flat and gives devastating one shot kills out to 300 yds
  6. for sale Hawke Endurance rifle scope illuminated centre dot reticule 2.5-10x56 30mm tube boxed with all instructions £160 posted or collect pm with any questions
  7. does anybody know if this company still exists, and have you ever dealt with them, just looking through their price list of scopes and i think it must be well out of date
  8. i load my own 40g v max and think they are super fast and accurate, hornaday have been £21 for 20 round here for a while, but see if you can get your hands on some norma 40g v max, they used to be about £15 for 20 and they are equally as good as hornaday if not better
  9. the scope will be used for lamping foxes from a vehicle,i use a top end hawke at the moment and am happy with it but on some of the areas i shoot I'm having to take longer shots and at about 200yds using a filtered lamp I'm only looking at eyes, so thinking better glass would improve this, as for the model i am thinking of the fixed 10x56 as the scope i use is a 3- 10 and ever since Ive had it its been on 10x so i don't see the need for a variable type of scope, i would really prefer a tad more mag something like a 14x56 but don't know if they do one, by the way the scope i use at the moment has an illuminated centre dot which i like very much and the ior offers the same...
  10. baldrick i know you are a meopta fan, how do you rate the ior against them?
  11. whats the quality like with these scopes ? can any of you users give your opinions please, is the glass of the quality that other top makes use ? just looking for info....thanks
  12. thinking of adding one of these rubber eyepiece gadgets to my scope as i was shooting rabbits last evening and having to shoot one handed and using the other hand to shield the low sunlight from my eye, i see attleborough accessories have one in their catalogue, whats your opinions of these maximizers good or not good?
  13. i have three hawke scopes, hawke eclipse on an air rifle, sidewinder 30 on an hmr, endurance 30 on a 223, if you are after value for money then you wont go wrong with this brand of scope as they seem to have a scope range to suit every pocket. had a pleasant surprise last week i had a look through a friend of mines leupold and could not see any difference bearing in mind his scope cost a lot more than the hawke
  14. yes i have seen it, i especially like the early 70s country music
  15. 6-24x56 hawke sidewinder, savage btvs, federal vshock 17gn, have got it out to 200mtr, zeroing it at 90 mtr and dialing in the elevation every 20mtr until 200mtr, furthest rabbit shot at 194mtr with help from a rangefinder on a still evening.
  16. found this channel...fieldsports channel.tv... looks very interesting, just been watching on my pc, does anybody know when it is launched?
  17. i to have the thumbhole laminate savage and find it very nice, you shouldn't find it too hard to find, your local gunshop can probably order one for you, they are distributed by garlands and mine came within a week. Ive had mine for over a year now and it was well under £500 , they've probably gone up in price by now though
  18. i use a hawke endurance on my foxing rifle it has an illuminated centre dot which i find great at night, it doesn't obscure the target and is useful if you have to take a moving shot, well worth the extra few pounds
  19. I've been doing quite a lot of range work with my hmr and i have fitted a tactical type of scope to it and have got it out to 200mtr quite accurately, i have taken rabbits out to 194mtr on a dead still afternoon and i consider myself to be an average shot but if you are a good shot i think you will enjoy the hmr on the cost thing a hundred bullets wont cost any more than an average meal out
  20. i have 160 once fired winchester hornet cases , don't know what they are worth so pm me with an offer, buyer to pay p/p or collect
  21. i use the savage thumbhole and find it a very comfortable rifle to use, but maybe hard to find a used one at the moment, never discount a cz though they are very well made and very accurate out of the box, i have a 527 in 223 and i am a big fan of the set trigger and i see cz now offer an hmr with the set trigger i think it is a 453 and i would definitely have considered one if they were out when i was looking for my hmr
  22. I'm noticing that a large number of rabbits in my area have mixy, i don't think i have ever seen the disease at this time of year before and i did notice that in aug and sept last year there were very few diseased rabbits around, those seem to be the months that i usually see them in my area./...whats the situation in other areas?
  23. just watched an old video in which fred carter tries out a cirrier rifle, an fac up to 80ft-lbs, are these rifles of good quality and were they reliable, i say were because the vid was shot some years ago, dont even know if they are still made
  24. just as a matter of interest, i have just bought a hawke sidewinder 6-24x56 and even at 24 power is nice and clear Ive put it on my hmr and i think it is going to be very good, after a lot of practice and dialing it in at ranges from 90 to 200mtr, ive been out rabbiting tonight and shot rabbits from 82 to 194 mtr, i dont intend using it at night much but it seems a good buy for just under £250
