My grans family owned Collins mountain near Newrey in NI and when her husband died in 1919 somehow she was edged sideways and got nothing but I cannot find reference to this mountain anywhere. My great great grandfather was a travelling salesman for Donegal tweed and always had a pistol with him while in England so the social structure is still unchanged there in the UK (joke).
  2. I would go to £240 on the Yukon. Martin
  3. What about posting it to me in Dover Kent? price?? Martin
  4. Not odd at all it is the way European hunters get some money back into their permissions, boar shooting in the UK is also a pay by jobbie. Martin
  5. I have now bought this item just awaiting delivery. Martin
  6. I will take it delivered to Dover, Kent. Martin
  7. The insert are knurled and are meant to be pushed into the holes then a soldering iron held on the brass will melt the plastic just enough to hold them in tight thats how prototype builders use them.
  8. When the French trappers came up to him while he was sleeping against a tree he shoots one with his flintlock pistol then hobbles quickly off and swings this empty gun around and gives off another shot at them so I was a witness to a miracle.
  9. Many moons ago one of our shooting club members was in a group of 4 at a pistol competition. On the way back they got squashed / hassled on an A road by young bucks in the wide wheel big exhausted Ford Escort, the young bucks were shaking fists and generally threatening with their behavior. My mate took his .45 out and held it up at the window = all became very calm and the Escort very quickly left the scene. An armed society is a polite society = a proverb of the Americans. Martin
  10. I come from "Boventry" thanks to Eric Idle (near Birmingham) and it took me years to lose that accent. Still think it sounds thick. Estuary English though is worse IMO. I found when I was on a shoot near Biscester that they had a fine accent very clear and concise. Martin
  11. There is the dover sea angling club maybe thats a good place to find a days boat fishing. Martin
  12. In Germany not every hunter carries a pistol and mainly if they do it is the older hunters using Walther ppks in 7.62 because when the police re equipped to 9mm they were sold off cheap. Generally the hunter will use a combination gun with a shot barrel available for dispatch or if and when they shoot from high seats using only a rifle they do a good job of hitting/killing the prey. Martin
  13. Well I emigrated to Germany fully in 2002 (I had a German partner since 1981) although I had worked very regularly there since 1977 and as an EU citizen it was and is legal. So the flow of people is two way. To live over there you have to be registered with the local authorities and must prove to them that you do pay German health insurance, so they will not accept blatant spongers, My example, I was finding it hard to get a job at first and so I went to the local unemployment office just to ask them help me find work, the answer I got back was "you have not paid into our system yet so bog off and find your own job". ****** me off big time then but in retrospect they did have a point (you just need to watch the cops in the Munich underground stations checking the papers of shifty or likely looking illegals to know they as a society do not take any ****). It keeps the place far more controlled so I guess the chancers all head west for the UK where 1. the cops never seem to be outside of the station or their patrol cars except when responding to an incident, suss is not allowed. 2 no UK registration laws of any functional worth. 3. a flourishing black market in iffy IDs. Please feel free to add what I missed. And I am sure that I am not a racist (I am an immigrant in Germany after all, so no stone throwing from me) before the huggers start to pilory me, I believe that I am just a realist looking from the outside at a small island with a wonderfull history but what is now a seriously underfunded society. Martin
  14. The farm owner is Richard Ledger according to the local paper in Dover and as I understand it he will have no tolerance of untidy or unsporting/dangerous shooters. Tilmanstone is 5 miles frome the Dover ferry terminal so that equals 2 hours travel time from Calais. So why should he not accept French shooters? I have had the pleasure of shooting a couple of years over his land before now and he is an absolute OK farmer IMHO. Its just a press blow up against shooters in general about gunning scaring the riders/horses who should be aware of what will happen around harvest time and so adjust their schedule as we all use the countryside together. Martin
  15. My american pal came over to Germany in 1989 to work for 6 months and needed a bank account opening in Jersey to funnel his funds through, so he wrote a cheque made out to me peronally for 36,000 dollars so that I could arrange it for him in Kent. That was a shock to me but also was an expression of his trust in me. We went on to have a great friendship till he died in 2010. Martin
  16. I forgot to add in my original post that their first words from the two officers were that I should have called them first to inform them in advance that I was going to be out and about doing my lawfull business as guns were involved. Just to be fair to all the replies that arew harumping about this non-event. I still wish the post was deleted = yes over the top on my part but not correct on theirs either. Martin
  17. Oh well, Yes it was over the top from me as was the responses. I have quite a few German pals who are serving police and I had expected the title to just set off the post in a jocular manner. I had overlooked how PC and obiesant you have to be here in the UK (to know ones place and all that) I have never ever had a check by anybody on legal shooting in any other country they just undertand shooting better than the average UK nonshooter and let you get on with it. Sorry to any one who feels slighted. I do not know how to edit the title so if any moderator wishes to delete this thread then it is OK with me.. Martin
  18. As per my last post 5 minutes ago ref the polis visit. I had earlier had a telephone interview while in the hide for an automotive engineers job located in the Coleshill area so I was wondering how the shooting is now in the midlands around the Coventry area. As I have been away from the midlands since 1978. Thanks in advance Martin
  19. I was out today doing some legitimate vermin control "pigeon and corvids" and two rozzers turned up at the end of play looking a bit intimidating as I was packing up so I walked away from the hide and kept my hands visible so keep their heartrate down they were claiming some busybody had complained about shot landing onto an almost unused roadway 300 metres away Rubbish as I knew about the road and so I only took high shots aimed away from it and so did let a lot of low shots pass (I am not daft).. Anyway they checked my SGC with the national register and of course all was OK then they thanked me and went on their way. It wasted a half hour of my evening. Ho Hum - my first encounter with them while out shooting. Martin
  20. Too old to use smartphones (63) I don"t get on well with hitech stuff, I had 15 years on CAD drafting and hated it. Thanks for the info. Martin
  21. Anyone got a chronograph for sale or available for me to use near Dover, Kent? Will pay of course. Regards Martin
  22. Yanks and Germans are high on orange clothing for safety but only for ungulates (deer - boar) the rods in their eyes do not see colour so black & white and they rely on movement I understand birds see colour so the UV may spook them I have now washed my dpm jacket as the pigeons could smell me from 100 yards so time will tell on this topic. Martin
  23. With a couple of extended wires it could power some pigeon magnets also save on batteries. Martin
