  1. Her names isn't Boots by any chance?? Forget about hares....Lock up young deer !!
  2. Thanks... Very Lucky to get that much on board!!
  3. Or else I can use my 5 year old expert. She loves pigeons and is very crop conscious( Efficient) even on complete blind retrieves. I don't know how is does it!! I'll even leave the gun at home ......
  4. Gary, I'd be only too happy to pick up for you the next time. I'm in Tipp... I've a 13 month old steady ESS I'm only itching to get some more work for.Great bag though
  5. Thanks for all replies, I'm more confident now about "laid in wheat" or "laid wheat" or whatever. In fear of continuing this thread on but insects are a pain though.... :*)
  6. Is there any solid information on what kind of damage pigeons actually inflict on crops (laid barley/wheat) e.g.unchecked per day per one hundred birds A farmer asked me recently and I was was really only speculating.... I'd love to have been more in tune.
  7. The area in which I decoy has always been planted with Barley in the past and has attracted great numbers of birds. This year however the farmer has gone for almost all wheat .Are pigeons as partial to the wheat ? Someone told me that they love it even more so when its laid and not as much when its stubble .Any truth in this ?
  8. At what age is a female springer considered to be fully, physically grown-( I was going to say matured ?But this is a whole different ball game!!)
  9. Chespeake bay retrievers are a real one man dog- I'm sure you'll find loads of info. on-line about the breed. They were used at one stage to haul in overboard fisherman from the harshest northern seas as well as nets centuries ago. So they're well able anything the wildfowling situation will throw up- strength and cold endurance are they're biggest assets.they can even deal with ice .However leave them at home if your going to a nice formal shoot, generally they don't mix well with other canines you need also to be on top of them at all times & they make good guard dogs too. Try to get one as a puppy to establish your own guidelines and it makes it a whole lot easier to introduce it to your springer.
  10. Any excess bunny meat I have I usually prepare for the springers-are mixy rabbits a complete no no for them ?? I come across alot of very heavily infected rabbits more recently.... stronger disease strains?
  11. What were you using the golden retriever for or did he just want in on the photo ? ?
  12. Right so yee don't believe me Man About Dog (15PG) Directed by Paddy Breathnach, starring Allen Leech, Tom Jordan Murphy, Ciaran Nolan, Sean McGinley, Fionnula Flanagan and Pat Shortt. Irish director Paddy Breathnach's fifth excellent feature, a story of smart alecs and scams set in the grey world of greyhound activities, is a bit of a shaggy dog tale itself. It's an Irish road movie along the lines of Breathnach's excellent 'I Went Down', Through dodgy dealings and bad luck three likely lads from Belfast - persuasive Mo Chara (Leech), unlucky Scud Murphy (Nolan) and stoner Cerebral Paulsy (Murphy) - manage to land themselves in a whole heap of trouble with bookmaker JP McCallion (McGinley). They owe £50,000 and have to pay him back in a week. In their efforts to get the cash together a whole series of misadventures befall the trio. They acquire a greyhound, only to discover that he won't run, so they sell him off to a gang of travellers (led by Shortt in stonewashed denim) - only to discover that he's great at hare coursing. After stealing the dog back, they set off for Clonmel and the biggest coursing event in Ireland, so dim-witted that they don't realise that their biggest problems - McCallion and the travellers - will turn up there too. It's a reasonably entertaining film but, once 'Man About Dog' moves from greyhound racing to coursing, it's on shaky territory. Coursing has long been a contentious issue in the world of Irish bloodsports and, although the greyhounds sport muzzles and no hares look like they've been harmed during the film(won't mention the crow and the incident at the game fair ), it is still uncomfortable viewing. On the plus side, the relationship between the three luckless boyos is what really makes 'Man About Dog' come alive. Tom Jordan Murphy, recently seen in a similarly dopey role in 'Adam and Paul', and Ciaran Nolan are good but it's Allen Leech ('Cowboys & Angels') as the charismatic, happy-go-lucky Mo Chara that really stands out. Pearse Elliott's script is hillarious with plenty of dodgy dogs and trip-ups along the way. Caroline Hennessy
  13. Has anyone seen the film "Man About Dog" ? It has just been realesed in Irish cinemas (1st October ) -its got lurchers, greyhounds, terriers, shooting, coursing and game fairs. Its a laugh and a half too I'm not messing -its filling cinema s everynight all over the country. A MUST SEE . (unless they've banned it on yee too ) Bring the antis it'll make a great date
  14. Firstly,I would like to sympathize with those of you who are under the tyranny of Tony Blair's rule.Thankfully such bills are way down on the Irish Governments agenda, probably more due to inefficiencies on more critical matters though. I'd like to think that when our time does come that the state's office will recognise that rural matters are best left to people who know the countryside -country people and not the bureaucrats sitting in parliament offices. Do the house of commons know any real rurals affairs ?? I have a deep rooted love for fieldsports, particularly those involving dogs and for conservation of the countryside. The thought of open fields get me through a mundane urban work week. I cannot believe that in a day of high rates of crime, violence, drugs and suicides that your right as a dignified human is been taken because they don't understand the need. YOU ARE THE BEST CONSERVATIONISTS THE COUNTRYSIDE HAS GOT.DO NOT LIE DOWN Our thoughts and support are with you . Tom.
