  1. I take loads of photos on my days out mainly of the dog & the bag & anything unusual of intrest to me. I also keep a written game book ie date & time, farm, crop, weather, bag, would make good ammo for a divorce layer. I have posted a few on here with a small write up, to share with anyone interested. I view other peoples photos on here, some are exceptional if I remember right the ones by Magwitch? with the whippets on rabbits brilliant takes me back to my youth.
  2. Picked up some peas to shoot, 4 fields in total spread over a mile along a country road. Its on a flood plain, no hedges just deep drainage ditches well full. Been a good number on the 3 smaller fields in the afternoons, banger on the biggest field is working at the minute. The peas are about an inch high, went yesterday afternoon with my brother, he went on the first field, I set up under a power line towards the bottom end about half a mile away. Put 8 plastics out randomly & put the rotor under the lines to stop them trying to land on them, find this works. Could hear our kid shooting before I finished setting up. Pigeons in straight away decoying well, had some cracking high shots & had a few that must have been wearing body armour. Could see some power lines in the distance must have been a good couple of hundred dropping onto rape. Shot last pigeon at 7 o’clock finished up picking 41, our kid went at 6 & picked up 21.
  3. I'll second that, never touched the field in any number after harvest till it was drilled with wheat, loads of beans on top had 2 days on it 2 weeks apart, (end of sept 1st week oct) bags of 70 & 80 picked up
  4. good bag mate, weathers been wet round here from last week managed a walk out with rimfire friday evening shot 1 missed 1 then got soaked
  5. good day out mate, still plenty on the rape round here, its just a case of finding the bits that are shootable,
  6. Its happened to me on a few occasions in the past, recced a field, planned for the day & someone beats me to it, on the other hand had shooters come up & say I was going to shoot this field today, it works both ways. Few year ago passed a pea field everyday to & from work, allways a few pigeon on it never saw anyone shooting, called at the farm was given permission straight away, a tour of the land, map of the farm, full vermin rights etc, asked does anyone else shoot on here he said no. Shot the field which was'nt as good as expected, had a week walking the land cleaning up a few rabbits, came across a release pen, feeders all in good condition. Week later met the wannabe keeper (or the bloke who ran the shoot) not a nice guy, got a little heated, then the farmer turned round & said I only gave you permission on the peas. Just walked away & left them to it. I would not intentionally make a move on anyones permission but thers plenty out there who will
  7. Went out with the rimfire yesterday evening for a couple of hours, sat in an old cattle shelter. I like to thin these sets back early on as they get covered in nettles & the rabbits on here soon wise up. Its in a hollow with banks on 3 sides, the sets have been here years & are deep & extensive. Plenty of young rabbits about but left them for a few more weeks before there ready to harvest. Had some nice shots & finished up with 8 picked up including 1 with a front leg missing, it was off from above the elbow & the stump had healed perfect. It was a healthy rabbit decent weight & had a full string of young uns when gutted. Some pics of the evening
  8. Another good bag mate, seeing plenty on clover round here late afternoons
  9. Went back to a rape field I shot 3 weeks ago & picked up 24 , there are a few patches were its been wet & the rapes thin, only saw a couple of pigeon but set up anyway at 3 o’clock as I’m running out of places to go. Found a spot in a ditch under a row of tall willows, could just see the birds on the rotor over the top of the rape as its quite thick for a good 10 mtrs out. Not been sat down 2 minutes 2 pigeon in decoyed perfect, sharp R&L 2 in the bag, then 2 more straight in dropped first missed second, which was the easiest of the lot. At 5 o’clock I only had another 3 in the bag & another one missed, then birds started coming not massive numbers, but decoying well, shot the last one at quart to seven finished up with 17 picked. Sat on this field a lot longer in a lot worst weather for a lot less over the years.
  10. top shooting, there still hitting the rape around here, first thing in the morning & late afternoon, shot 1 at 18.45 yesterday. loads dropping on some rape on way home at half seven.
  11. its a great tool for the job, S&B 6X42 & winnie super X subs, deadly combination.
  12. took me a while to get that must be tired
  13. Driving home from Hull today about 3 ish, west bound side of M62 about half a mile from Howden turn off & Wren kitchen place, saw a good number approx 100 plus pigeon on the power lines & in the trees at the side of a rape field. I know theres a few on here from Goole area, could be worth a look.
  14. Had a walk round yesterday evening, lovely to be out after work. Good stiff breeze plenty of sun, loads of rabbits out, me & the dog went stalking, shot 10 lost 1 kicked down hole.
  15. Had a good look round the rape on good Friday afternoon, most of its well in flower but there’s bits were its been wet or grazed back that’s still shootable usually take note of these & keep an eye on them until they catch up, found a few feeding on one field I haven’t shot this year, at 3 o’clock & they were still around at 6 ish on my way back, so decided to go back Saturday about 2, its not had a lot of pigeon damage but it holds water in one corner & before they built up the farmer stuck a gas gun on (been moved now). Been having a look every time I pass on the way to & from another farm & have never seen many on, saw a car parked up & someone set up in the corner under a tree about 6 week ago, this was were they were feeding now. Found 6 empty cartridges & a nice ledge cut out of the ditch side, thought might as well set up in the same spot as they had also trimmed the hawthorn behind me. Set up at 2 o’clock with the rotor & 5 full bodied deeks, had 2 pigeon in straight away but they came in at an awkward angle making it difficult to get a bead on them. Moved the rotor another 10 paces out to my left, & bingo the next one in straight in the bag, the shot lifted a good 50 birds from an embankment on the dual carriageway about 200 yds behind me they came over high & disappeared over the hillside, had a steady trickle of birds come back all afternoon some suicidal some wary of the rotor, swapped the deeks for 10 dead pigeon on cradles, set them in the rape leaving the wheeling’s clear. Shot one that dropped in the high rape when it went down it didn’t look stone dead, so sent the dog straight out, she went into the rape & I heard a squeal she came back with a mixie rabbit, first I’ve seen this year. She found the pigeon a good 20 yds from were it had gone down, another one that wouldn’t have made it into the bag without her. Shot last one at half six, ended up with 25 picked up.
  16. made me smile that title Les Rabbit & Teal sounds like a new cop show, anyone seen it on sky
  17. Cheers for replys lads, met the farmer turned out to be a proper gent, thanked me for putting the hours in, theres a couple of places were it looks patchy so could get another shot on it, had second dressing on friday last week probably upto me waist by this weekend
  18. Picked up some pigeon shooting on an as & when required basis 2 weeks ago, the field is next to a farm I shoot, there has been a good number feeding on it all winter, but the owner had never allowed any shooting in the past. Called in at the farm, talking to the eldest son about shooting etc & about the field in question, found out it had been sold the year before to a farmer just up the road. Went straight to the new owners farm driving down the lane was followed by a large Alsatian there was another on a chain in the yard, & a nasty looking mongrel roaming about barking. No one came out of the house & there was no way I was getting out of the landie, so I went to turn round & the Alsatian tried to bite the front tyres. I don’t like phoning for permission but decided in this case it would be the best idea, the farmers wife answered & after explaining what I wanted she gave me his mobile. Managed to get hold of him straight away, I just asked for a day on them as there was a good number still hitting the field & he agreed, he said he didn’t get much trouble with pigeon & just requested that if I wanted to shoot anytime in the future that I should give him a ring to let him know. Gave it a full day & picked up 28 which is not a bad bag for this area, decided to give them another go this weekend as I could only shoot till dinner & its only a couple of mile from our house. At the other end of the field there is a 3 acre piece joined on with a few oaks in the corner, about 20 yds had been stripped into the point of the corner so I stuck rotor well out & put 5 deeks on cradles at the edge of the high rape. Pigeon came in over my head in ones & twos & dropped straight in, easy shots picked up 18, packed up at 12 ish, lovely morning out. Went out Sunday afternoon, different farm set up on a large block of rape bordered on one side by a row of willows & a shallow ditch, with the amount of rain we had on Sat night the ditch had six inch of water in it, found a dry spot in a gap between 2 willows & set up the same as yesterday 5 deeks & rotor, shot the first pigeon at half past 1 then nothing for an hour. Had the odd bird showing interest & by 4 o’clock only had 8 in the bag but noticed a few starting to move about in the distance. Started coming in 1’s & 2’s pulling them in from a good distance away, had some cracking shooting & finished the day at half 5 ish with the best right & left I’ve pulled off for a long time, one to remember. Ended up with 22 picked well pleased, nice end to a lovely weekend. All shot with 32 gram steel 5’s for the hawk man
  19. I put my 2 shotguns & 22 rimfire in storage with a local gunshop when I went on holiday for 4 weeks last year, gave me piece of mind while I was out of the country, also a bloke round the corner had just had a gun stolen while he was on a weekend break. The cost was £2.50 per gun per week, he logged the serial numbers in a book gave me a receipt, that simple
  20. well shot mate, the last line of your write up says it all

  23. shootings been my passion 30 plus years now ollie, shot plenty of foxes in that time, this farm is arable no serious game shooting, leave fox & hares alone as requested farmer believes in a balance, another permission different story would have got both barrels.
