  7. Hi Everyone, Im hoping you can give me your veiws on the following. I have a seven and a half year old black lab that picks up on a local pheasant shoot and sits patiently in a pigeon hide during close season.Hes a very soft dog never shown any aggression towards other dogs,he picks up enthusiastically and works his socks off.Recently after a trip to the vets they found one of his balls is bigger than the other and they would like to do an ultrasound to see if theres a growth in one.If there is they would take a sample and after testing decide whether to castrate him.I have no desire to breed from him so it may be a good idea just to have him castrated without the ultrasound and tests.I do worry if having his balls taken away will affect his working desire or undo his chilled out temperament What are your thoughts people Thanks in advance.

  10. Hi Everyone hope you can help on a topic I know nothing about.I have a 7 year old black lab who I have trained for picking up on a local shoot and to take pigeon shooting with me.He has a wonderful soft temperament and I was wondering if I should breed from him .I bought him from a well known trainer breeder and his father is an IGL champion and is in the gundog legends. So my question is do I breed from him or avoid diluting the pedegree and go get another pup who's parents are ftc and proven etc.I hope I've made some sort of sense . Thanks in Advance Lee

  18. kent..fit a trap after the drainage that will stop any smells and draughts.
  19. Im with scutt if the dog is to be kenned then use the kennel from the word go .Any dog taken from an indoor environment with a higher temp and the company of a family will find the transfering to a kennel harsh,be prepared for alot of whining and barking. My 8 week old lab went straight in his kennel from day 1 and was perfectly happy.Re the sleeping area.I have a dog flap that goes from his run into a sleeping area which has 6 inches of celotex insulation on a concrete floor with ply over the top and 3 inches of celotex around the walls and on the roof area(again coverd with ply).Remember the sleeping area shouldnt be to big as the dogs own body heat warms the den just as it would in the wild.Any Q feel free to message me and good luck. Lee

  22. Hi all, I have a bit of a problem here so hope you guys can help. I have a 2 yr old lab well on the way with its 1st season pheasant ,duck, partridge picking up completed and now on the pigeons.last year when i went on holiday for 2 weeks the gun dog trainer/breeder i bought him from kennelled him for me and exercised him with a bit of training thrown in for a reasonable fee.(fee isn't really whats bothering me). He is a very reputable trainer and most people on here would know or have heard of him so i was very comfortable in leaving my boy with him. However he has since moved to the other end of the country and now I'm in a situation where i may have to use normal kennels (GULP). Would you or have you done this? What special requests did or would you make on his exercising...ie not throwing balls etc Does anyone know a gun dog trainer in the berkshire area who will kennel him for me. Thanks in advance Lee
  23. Hi all, thanks for some really good tips on getting this under control,I'm really worried about ruining this dog and want to get things right.I will take your advice and anymore that is given. Thanks guys Lee
  24. Hi straightbarrel,i think i may have not explained myself well enough,my lab has not just had a few days training rammed into him then thrust into a shooting situation. He has been nurtured along and time taken on each aspect of his training.just because he has started to run in don't think he has always been like this.He was completely steady at the start of the season.Your comments make me sound as if i have rushed his initial training which couldn't be further from the truth.Your comment about pulling your wotsit explains nothing to me.I have obviously made a mistake somewhere along the line and i am trying to sort it out.The dog is behaving in the manufactured situation but i can't simulate any more than what i can.If you can help I'm all ears but please don't think of me as a lazy inconsistent trainer. LEE
