Some states get twenty EC votes and another state gets three. So if a candidate wins by a single vote in say Florida he gets twenty electoral college votes. If his opponent wins by a million votes in Maine he only gets about three. So its heavily skewed towards not how many votes a candidate gets as much as where he gets them., Thats how Hillary Clinton got three million more votes than Trump in 2016 but still lost
