Individual pieces of type are a harder alloy than linotype metal. Its called monotype and contains a bit more antimony. You need some tin to make the alloy flow nicely generally. Linotype got remelted over and over again in the hot metal typesetting machines until it degraded

Pure antimony wont just mix in if you add it to lead, it will just float on the top. You need type alloy

85% of care homes in this country are privately run. They charge anything from £700 to £2,000 a week and yet the media would have us think that its the Governments fault the homes haven't got PPE. British companies are saying they have PPE, why don't the homes buy it? I went on line and bought masks and gloves for my family. Apart from the fact they were clearly overpriced there was no problem and no shortage.

Presumably, as most of them are not British nationals they could be deported if they commit a crime here now.?

Its much more complicated than most people on here could ever imagine. To become a supplier for the NHS, MOD etc you have to become accredited and go through a lengthy process by which both you and your products are rigourously screened. Then you get a supplier number. You can't just phone up and say you have a container load of PPE are you interested? ten grand for cash? It doesn't work like that unfortunately. They would have no way of knowing if it was fit for purpose, whether it was knock off or if it even existed . They are being bombarded I would imagine by all sorts of Arthur Daly types trying to make a quick sale at the moment What should and must change after this however is that we should pass a law saying that all vital supplies should be manufactured in the UK so we don't fall foul of this international supply chain where orders get blocked or diverted to a higher bidder
