I’m with Cambridgeshire, I sent my renewal in September last year and it was done and dusted by the time my cert was due to expire in the October. To be fair they were easy to deal with, had a quick online interview and that was job done.

Hi all. We have our new pup settled and very much part of the family. Just a quick edit to add he’s 13 weeks old. early training training is going well, he has ‘sit’ and his crate training is good, along with general house training. The one thing we need to sort is that he’s is very playful, and often wants to play fight and get quite nippy. He doesn’t bit but, the usual nipping the fingers and toes but it’s a bit to often. Any advice on stopping this nipping/play fighting?

Rusty has settled in well. had his second jab now so we’ll be out for walks in the next few days.

It’s no hardship looking at puppies! This time we were lucky enough to see both parents with the litter. Both parents are working dogs, wildfowling mostly. There were a couple of pups I was interested in but this one stood out to me. There was also a bitch I liked but as I’ve never had a dog I thought I’d have a change. Truth is if they weren’t from the same litter I’d probably have both. I find it equally hard retiring a dog as I do saying good bye, it’s difficult going out on the marsh without them. You get used to them being there, you even get used them drinking your coffee when your not looking. I never could put my flask and cup down without one of them drinking it. Crate training going well. A bit of time in the sun.

He certainly is. He’s settling in well. I’m going to put a hot water point on outside next to the hose tap, ready to wash him down when we get back from trips to the marsh.

My two were 12 and 14 when I had to let them go, the eldest one I retired a couple of years ago. She was struggling in the cold at times. Like you I can’t be without a dog, even just to have about the house. I looked at part trained, I thinks that’s a good idea, it’s just the additional cost can be off putting. This is Rusty. He’s settling in well.

Hi Arpee, the pups I’m look on g at are from a working line, both the parent dogs are keen on the forshore. I like the look of a Golden Retriever , they seem a good mix of working ability but more settled when at home.

Hi All, I’m thinking about getting a new pup, having lost my dogs earlier this year due to age/cancer, I wasn’t going to get another but miss having a dog about and would like to start wildfowling again. Anyone used a red golden retriever on the shore before?

My Dr recommend an all day monitor but they didn’t have one so didn’t bother. But would be good to do.

Similarly with my work, I’m either nailed to my desk or stuck in a car, which I feel is a death sentence. My wife also suffered with post natal depression, which caused some serious stress and still does. I was very active once, played rugby, out shooting or walking the dogs twice a day. But as life has changed and I got older, rugby stopped, the dogs the got old and the walks got shorter and the dogs have since passed. my BP was 140/105, I was due to have a op but my BP was too high. I had to take amlodipine to get the 105 down. I’ve since had the op and decided I need to get back to being healthy again. i fear having stroke or something heart related happening.

Hi all, slight tangent but related. I’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure/hypertension. My usual doctor response is take a tablet, good bye. As we get older l the risk of stokes, heart disease etc no doubt goes up. I’m sure my blood pressure is increased by stress and whilst I’m happy to take a pill if it saves my life, I’d rather not have to. I was once more active but as I’ve got busier in my career and with a family now I find time for such things as going for a run harder to find. I was wondering what results people have had by including more exercise in theirs routine. I know any exercise is better than none, but I’m more interested in people’s results regarding blood pressure, cholesterol or such related things.

We made the decision to say goodbye on Saturday. Poppy became worried at night, her eyes were bad and her hearing was poor, and she couldn’t recognise anyone in the dark. The cancer had spread to the lymph nodes also. She was 14 years old. We also had to have my other dog put down, she had a cancerous tumour in her mammary gland, which she was living with, but I found a lump under her leg, it’s likely the cancer had spread. She was 12 years old. The kids are devastated but they understand that letting them suffer is not best for the dog. This Poppy This is Teasel.

16 is a very good age. She was certainly a character. I remember you being unwell on that day now that you mention it. I have been a member for a couple of years now but hope to rejoin now I’m on top of work and getting my house sorted. Just a little update. Poppy is doing well but we’re taking it day by day. She’s happy plodding about the field out the back and eating well. we have a rat in the garden, under the shed, which is also keeping her entertained. Thanks for the advice. I have tried having her in the house, as I thought she would be more comfortable but she gets too hot and unsettled. I have tried her in the house before and she has never really been happy in the house. I think they get used to the conditions the live in.

Hi Harrycat1, good to hear from you. It’s not Teasel, though she’s 10 now, doesn’t get out much but I take her out when I can. It’s Poppy, I’m have issues with. how’s your dog now? Must be getting on. Are you a member of SLWC? needless to say they are both enjoying the frosty weather, I think my pair love the cold.

She’s been a cracking mutt, her nose was awesome at her peak. She has flushed and retrieved all manner of things, partridge, pheasant, golden plover, pigeon, hare, rabbit, fox, duck, woodcock, snipe, even moorhen. I have even tracked deer with her on the odd occasion when a friend had a runner and couldn’t find a lost roe. She is on a mongrel, Weimaraner cross Springer, cost me £150 including hand, worm & flea treatment, but we went out shooting all day every Saturday for years. And that is what makes it so hard to say goodbye, they really are a friend. She’s not even had any major health issues till lately. It’s a very good poem, and gives good reason for the decision we make.

Yep, she’s had a check up every year and they’ve looked at the lump. They did offer to investigate/surgery but at 14 yrs there’s no guarantee that she will survive the anaesthetic. It’s difficult letting them go but more difficult to watch them wither away. I’ll keep an eye on her but I think this may be her last Christmas.

I have two dogs, the eldest is nearly 14. She is definitely showing her age and has had a couple of issues, one being a lump on her chest and the other a hormonal in-balance which causes her to bleed, though this has stopped recently. They are outside dogs, they have a run. but recently when I’ve let them out the oldest just seems to not bother, in fact she will often stay in her bed. But when she does come out for a play she is happy and has potter about. more worryingly she has lost some weight recently, I feed both dogs the same and the other dogs weight is constant. She did wee in her bed also, which she has never done before. I don’t want to have her put down just because she’s old but also I can’t sit and watch her waste away. Thoughts?

Even so, it’s definitely at home stuck in the mud somewhere. No doubt even the arthritic dog is happiest when muddy and wet.

A stick with a head like that should be down on the foreshore tucked creek with a dog one side and a flask of coffee the other, watching the sun rise.

Ayano3 was one of the two, washwildfowler being the other, that got me into wildfowling. We had a few flights together. Certainly one of the few who had time for the next generation of fowlers. My first wildfowling outing was with Ayano3 on shepwhites marsh. Sad to hear of his passing.
