  1. so... which of us are going to be next to email the whitehouse?
  2. Just thought id share something my local rfd told me a couple of weeks ago. Apparantly the application booklet is being shortened down to a single a4 page, anyone else heard anything, or seen the new forms? He told me the cops original idea of making the applications very complicated to reduce firearms numbers has backfired, and has left them snowed under with mountains of paperwork and criticism from every direction
  3. what about this then? exchange the banjo and the trumpet for a shotgun and the accordion for cartridge bag and bobs your uncle!! :hmm:
  4. IM CONFUSED! When she later walked out of the cell after a police doctor visited her she recalled being "lifted up under the arms like a doll by Sgt Andrews and thrown headfirst back into the cell". is this when she got injured? cos i thought she hadnt been in a cell before he threw her into one?

  14. funny we seem to be having more luck with them during the afternoon lately than at night saw 2 today when out after ducks, blasted one, and a couple of weeks ago i shot one with the .22 when out with a couple of friends who were decoying pigeons!
  15. weird now, heres a question for all of you, theres a jack daw floating about the town that has white patches on him no, its not a magpie before anyone starts its a jackdaw that looks like someones hit him a few times with a paint brush, whats that likely to be?
  16. ive got a choice between a 4 year old rottweiler who doesnt like gunshots or walking more than 100 yards, and a 5 month old rottweiler/labrador cross who's only started her training and makes zebedee look calm and placid... i usually prefer mornings for them, just after dawn, but due to the usual i didnt get out in time, wouldve waited til dusk but was helping out in the bar again so had to be home at 7 plus id got bored at one point and decided to see how waterproof my gaitors/boots combo actually was (couldnt be bothered putting on full waterproofs for a couple of hours), by crossing the river. needless to say they werent as wateproof as id hoped admittedly it wasnt the worst of days, especially with the fox, just **** law how things work out. i swear ive only had about 4 trips this year that have worked out the way i had hoped they would, and ive been out 2 or 3 times a week! is it just me or does anyone else find this?! :yp:
  17. went out on my first duck session of the year today. things were looking good then the usual happened - "i cant make it til a bit later", "oh i havnt heard from him", "give me an hour and ill be right there..." etc... so i finally managed to get out at 3PM to have a couple of hours walking the river bank id got permission on this year. i noticed a few ducks on it last saturday, and the farmer told me last night he'd scared 10/12 up off it during the week, so i was quite hopeful.... so guess how many ducks i got?! 0. yep, zero. guess how many ducks i saw? 0 (unless you count two swans). even the ******* wooden duck decoys that had been floating in the river last week have disappeared! but somehow, even though it was a duck hunt, we managed to pick off a couple of crows and a large fox which i squeaked into 20 yards - kinda took me by surprise it worked so well, i was only squeaking on the back of my hand at least it wasnt a total disaster, roll on next weekend so i can have another attempt...
  18. i understand what youre saying, but dont agree with all of it it. i think (as someone else pointed out earlier) we need to remember not all areas have the same numbers of birds, so something that stands in your area may have no bearing on another. yes, pigeons are a challenging bird, and yes i believe everything we shoot deserves our respect, no matter if its a rat or a deer (in so much as i minimise suffering and try not to kill if i dont need/have to), but in my eyes pigeons are on the general licence to be shot as a pest, not as a game/sporting bird. if its the case where you need to clear as many out as possible because of this then imo theres nothing wrong with the attitude of killing everything that comes within range, but i do think that once you bring the numbers down to a manageable level you can be a bit more selective i dont have much of a pigeon problem here (except ferals in barns) but one area i shoot was over run with rabbits this year, so we hit it hard and often for a couple of months and put a massive dent in the population. now its at the stage where the population is easily managed i can ease off on it; instead of trying to pick up 10/20 rabbits 2 or 3 evenings a week im happy enough taking a walk around it once every month or two, and maybe just taking 2 or 3 rabbits. thats why i keep saying im not taking sides in this argument - i cant pick between "leave them be vs kill them all" because i fall firmly on both sides of the divide ps should be easy enough for someone to do a colour coded map showing which areas most pigeons are shot in by pw members :look:

  20. is the uniform a white vest? :good:
  21. im a bit confused at the point of this thread, although i know fishermanmike is only looking to start a debate and possibly a few arguments - This topic has been aired before but it always stirs up a few of the hardened assassins amongst us and is good for a debate so here goes Highlander you seem to be erring towards leaving pigeons alone to breed; fair enough, but in your own words, when dismissing the studies which say wood pigeons are increasing, you said "For serious, reliable and factual information you can't beat genuine fieldwork." does that mean if someone goes out and see's a couple of thousand woodies floating about they should be perfectly happy to shoot 500+? and what if a farmer asks you to clear out wood pigeons as theyre hammering his crops, etc, yet when you get there you only spot a couple of dozen. does that mean you ignore the farmers wishes?! and as this thread is supposedly about decreasing wood pigeon numbers, whats everyone proposing? we dont shoot any pigeons at all? or we hold off until theyve built up sufficient numbers so no matter how much we shoot them it wont affect their numbers? if were afraid of them being taken off the general licence, well whats the minimum number to keep them on it? whats the maximum number we can get away with allowing to breed before they cause serious damage to farming? and if weve seen a steadyv population increase since 2003, yet theres been a decrease in the last year, have numbers decreased to a level after 2003 (so still high) or have they decreased to a level before 2003 (so taken a real hammering)? before anyone asks im not really on any side of this argument as crows (jackdaws, etc) are the main pest here at lately and now my head hurts thinking about all this  ;)
