  1. To answer your question, WMR plus RWS ammo - real brute - provided it suits the gun. 33 Remington is also very good as said. However, if you can stretch to it, get the doubler for the N 550 (may be a problem just at the mo' - getting the Sony lens out of Japan) and put it on a Hornet as Beretta says. That is my set up and is good for 200 yards but you may need some extra IR if it's a dark night. I must say though, my route would be the doubler on the 243 first and see how you get on providing you use the 243 for nowt else.
  2. Exactly. Specified range danger areas, other than pure distance, are empirical in nature which just means it hasn't happened YET. Consequently, as ever, Murphy and Sod must always be borne in mind.
  3. To put this into perspective and taking it that in the main we're talking sub-sonic: If you hit solid steel at precisely 90 degrees the bullet will stop and loose all its energy. If you hit said steel at 1 degree the bullet will go off at a tangent and loose very little energy comparitively speaking. Consequently, as as soon as you pull the trigger and the bullet develops a mind of its own over which you have no control, the only safe option is to cater for the worst scenario and take into account that any ricochet may travel the maximum distance that the bullet is capable of on its normal trajectory. So, question; given the most favourable trajectory, how far can a 40gr sub-sonic 22LR bullet travel? Given this answer (which probably isn't the same as given on the box), you then have your safety distance.
  4. Richard, brilliant. Many, many thanks. Cheers, Phil
  5. The fastest possible/acceptable speed of your car is, say, 110 mph. Your maximum acceptable choke is 1/2. Do you continually drive your car flat out? Give the old girl a rest and haggle £60 for Imp/ 1/2. Lots of other advantages as steel patterns tighter than lead. Many thanks.
  6. Bet the bloke in the shop wasn't a youngster! Back in the day there was hardly a 3" chamber to be seen so, yep, you had your 23/4 magnum. Eley did a good 11/2oz load. I can't check because my AYA is 21/2" and I can't now remember whether the proof was 900 or 1200kg/cm2. Perhaps you'd be kind enough to refresh my memory from the proof marks! Cheers
  7. And why not; after all we're decoying? My trouble is is that I know I'd be tempted to have a go so prefer to pick a cartridge whereby pattern and energy fail together. Now, when it comes to pheasant, with your combination which you're well used to shooting with, it's fill your boots time!
  8. Yep, to be "reasonably" sure of a clean kill, 5 pellets are required and in the central 20" area of the 30" circle this is delivered at 30 yards by 1/4 choke for 1oz of No 5s. The overall pattern density to achieve this is 75%. Therefore, it will be realised that even with Full, this cartridge choice breaks down at about 38 yards. Consequently, I'm with topshot and his 6.5s.
  9. Richard and Mike, Many, many thanks. Will look forward to the info. Cheers, Phil
  10. Hi, Guys, Anyone? Think Snowz got lost on his way home!? Cheers, Phil PS Thanks for trying, Mark. Sadly don't think that'll work, njc. The Weihrauch mag's are quite small with no chance of a fiddle. Had it sussed; 40gr Nosler single shot and 35 V Max mag fed, fox and rabbit and both with 1" high at 100yds (different zeroes). Simples! Then I found out how good the N550 is with the doubler so put that on and the different sight height fouled it all up. No real problem as the sight is easy to dial in and tells you where you're at, but prefer Plan A (the no fiddle version), so am going to have another play.
  11. Well, to be honest, in that case why is such a simple question beyond your capability? I don't fancy driving 11 miles and then walking 500 yards (and 500 yards back) to buy a quantity of something that I may well not use when a bunch of English speaking guys on here CAN understand the written word and are always helpful. Al4x - yep! Thanks, chaps Phil
  12. Richard, flippin eck, mate, that was quick and will do nicely. Many thanks, Phil
  13. Guys, help, please! Usual Hornady problem, as Title really - can anyone give me the OAL of the bullet? Cheers and many thanks in advance. Phil
  14. Here's the first of various: Our sponsor's camoreal. One big advantage is that the black ones can't see through it. For my money, just the one - Autumn/Winter
  15. Yep, splashed a fair bit of it around myself (spread over 20+ years, I started off touching up the blue paint on RAF ground equipment, then painting it all anti- collision yellow, then "tone down" green which everyone started driving into at night, so then had to daub a yellow stripe on everything) but as all of it wasn't IRR, that version, given a choice should, perhaps, be avoided. However, my original opening phrase remains valid.
  16. Hi, Please feel absolutely free to totally ignore this as I could be well out of order, but just trying to be helpful. Be careful which paint you get as there's something at the back of my mind that suggests that the IRR version does not like going on top of other paints. Cheers
  17. Why make things complicated with all this 3 for 1 or 2 for 1 or whatever rubbish. It doesn't matter if it hits you while you're packing up, driving home or having your meal that you suddenly realise that you've had a really good enjoyable day. Even if you've actually bothered counting, whatever your ratio was that day, it can't be beaten.
  18. Or do what I do and leave your hearing aid at home. Simples!
  19. Well, if you insist, you're talking ********. Two reasons for saying that: Firstly, I don't know where you've been but I thought for a minute that we may be heading back to the 243 & 200 yard zero saga. (If you're not with me, see about 1/2 way down Page 3 of B,C and Reloading.) However, hopefully it looks as though I'm wrong. Secondly, as I couldn't hit a rabbit at anything passed 200 and probably a fox (killing shot) similarly at 300 yards and as I had the pleasure of making the targets for one of the finest marksman that I've ever seen (the Queen's Medal was fast becoming an annual monotony), I don't need too much telling what is and what is not possible for a good man with a good rifle and consequently I stand in awe of that capability. No, No one talks ******** here, but some just speak before the testosterone spike has subsided and some confuse the ethics of target shooting with those that apply to live quarry. (That is a generalization, by the way.)
  20. Oh, *******, seconds out, round two.
  21. Just downloaded some bunny sized targets although I think they're actually prairie dogs ready for the day. On that you tube thingy, do you think that we see consecutive shots or are some edited out and if so would they be the misses? I've never shot 6.5 or 308 but what would a bunny sized head (2" dia.) shot at 300 equate to at 500 because I have a horrible feeling that we've just been there?
  22. Perhaps we should get the other 22457 members to vote and then we'll know how much of a problem we've got.
  23. Yep, stick with lead and let it wear you out!
  24. Why wait that long? The first one might just do it! What gun do you have?
  25. My guess is that it didn't start straight away for whatever reason and then "flooded" by continual attempts to start it. This often means that the fuel is getting there but the spark isn't with regard to the initial failure.
